Kovalainen could have chosen middle team over Caterham

Heikki Kovalainen has revealed he could have avoided racing straight to the back of the grid after losing his top McLaren seat at the end of 2009. In fact, the Finn signed on with the (then Lotus) Caterham team, whose only real opponents in the last three seasons have been the other 2010 startups Marussia and HRT. "I had other options, but not with any big teams -- teams that were in the middle of the pack," Kovalainen told Brazil's Totalrace. "I didn't see any […]

Petrov could leave Caterham after 2012

Vitaly Petrov's manager has revealed she is in talks with three teams about the 2013 season. After Renault (now Lotus) dropped him at the end of last season, Russian Petrov moved to the back of the grid for 2012 with Caterham. But the 27-year-old's manager Oksana Kosachenko has now hinted Petrov could lose his seat yet again once the current championship is over. "I would like something in my hands, something we can put on the table when we don't have any proper offer from […]

Heikki Kovalainen is looking for Caterham to move into the midfield, according to his new management company. Having handled his own career in the wake of Flavio Briatore's demise, Finn Kovalainen recently signed up with IMG, the sports and entertainment management giant. The 30-year-old has rebuilt his reputation since 2010 in the wake of mixed tenures for top teams Renault and McLaren. According to IMG Motorsport's head of clients Martin Anayi, Kovalainen is now regarded by Formula One team bosses up and down pitlane as […]

Petrov: Lotus relations turned sour

Vitaly Petrov has revealed he lost his seat at the Renault team, which is now known as Lotus, following disagreements with key team members. For 2012, the Russian has had to switch to Caterham, a F1 backmarker. In the meantime, with an all-new driver lineup comprising former world champion Kimi Raikkonen alongside Romain Grosjean, Lotus has stepped up a gear and is now among the sport's most highly competitive teams. "What happened last year was a shame, but at the end of the season relations […]

Fernandes rues lack of Malaysian support for Caterham

Tony Fernandes has admitted he would have liked corporate Malaysia to have backed his Formula 1 team. The Malaysian entrepreneur founded a UK based start-up team in 2010, calling it Team Lotus before a bitter spat developed with the Lotus name's owner Proton. "While I was building a Formula 1 team, I was being sued by my own countrymen," he told The Star newspaper. "We're the only true Formula 1 team developed in Malaysia." Now called Caterham, the team's only Malaysian sponsorship is from AirAsia […]

Fernandes: Caterham's midfield hopes not dead yet

Caterham's hopes of pushing into the midfield in 2012 are not dead yet. That is the claim of team owner and boss Tony Fernandes, despite the former Team Lotus looking to have once again emulated the pecking-order of the past two years by outpacing only Marussia and HRT in Australia. "We have obviously improved our pace relative to our 2011 speed," the Malaysian businessman said. "But the teams ahead have also improved, so even though we are closer than this time last year we still […]

Petrov as good as Trulli says Caterham boss

Caterham's team boss insists Vitaly Petrov is just as good as the experienced grand prix winner he replaced. Just ahead of the 2012 season, Malaysian entrepreneur Tony Fernandes decided to oust former Monaco grand prix winner Jarno Trulli with Russian Petrov, the well-sponsored Russian and former Renault driver. "I think he (Petrov) is as good a driver as Trulli, but he obviously brings a Russian commercial element," Fernandes told the US cable news channel CNN. "It gives us the ability to exploit commercial opportunities in […]

Petrov could stay at Caterham beyond 2012

Vitaly Petrov could stay at the Caterham team beyond 2012, the Russian's manager said on Friday. Earlier, the former Lotus outfit announced that Petrov, ousted by Lotus (Renault) at the end of last season, is replacing Italian veteran Jarno Trulli with immediate effect. On the face of it, the deal is not a good look for Petrov, having displaced one of F1's most experienced drivers - and a grand prix winner - on the back of his sponsors' purse. Moreover, it also means there is […]
