Caterham has confirmed that Tony Fernandes and his partners have sold the team to a consortium of Swiss and Middle Eastern investors, advised by former Formula 1 team principal Colin Kolles. Fernandes formed Lotus Racing - which morphed into Caterham - at the start of 2010 but has now departed the set-up, along with team principal Cyril Abiteboul. Christijan Albers, who raced in Formula 1 between 2005 and 2007, will take over day-to-day running of the team from Abiteboul, assisted by Manfredi Ravetto. The identity […]
Caterham owner Tony Fernandes has dismissed reports that he has put Caterham Group up for sale. Fernandes, whose QPR football team was promoted to the English Premier League last weekend, had suggested at the start of 2014 that the team would be sold if results did not improve. Caterham equalled their best ever finish in Monaco when Marcus Ericsson came home in 11th, but it was tempered by long-term rivals Marussia collecting their first points with Jules Bianchi in ninth. Reports at the weekend suggested […]
Caterham team owner Tony Fernandes says that Heikki Kovalainen's form during the final two races of 2013 played a part in the Finn missing out on a 2014 seat. Kovalainen raced for Caterham between 2010 and 2012 and remained with the team as their reserve driver for 2013 after failing to retain his race seat. Kovalainen was linked with a return to a race seat at Caterham but was overlooked in favour of Formula 1 returnee Kamui Kobayashi. Fernandes says that Kovalainen's two race stint […]
Caterham team owner Tony Fernandes says that his team must make progress in 2014 or he is likely to walk away from the project. Fernandes has been part of the team since its foundation as Lotus in 2010 but the squad has yet to score a point in four seasons of racing. Caterham slipped to 11th in the championship in 2013, having finished in 10th place throughout their first three campaigns. Caterham announced on Tuesday that Kamui Kobayashi and Marcus Ericsson will race for the […]
Lotus has confirmed that Heikki Kovalainen will replace Kimi Raikkonen for the rest of the 2013 season. Raikkonen will skip the final two rounds of the year after electing to undergo surgery on his injured back and compatriot Kovalainen will take over in America and Brazil. Kovalainen completed a seat fitting at the Lotus factory on Wednesday, before flying out to Austin. Kovalainen raced for Lotus under their previous guise, Renault, in his rookie season in 2007, finishing on the podium in the Japanese Grand […]
Senior figures inside Formula 1 have hit out at the spiralling costs of Formula 1, ahead of this weekend's Singapore Grand Prix. Caterham owner Tony Fernandes says that self-interest means Formula 1 teams have missed an opportunity to cut costs in the sport. Fernandes entered the sport in 2010 on the promise of a budget cap, which was ultimately abandoned. "I’ve been consistent since day one I’ve been in Formula One that costs are too high and every… when I came into Formula One, people […]
Jarno Trulli has announced plans to sue Caterham team owner Tony Fernandes. At the end of 2011, with a firm contract for 2012, the Italian reportedly agreed to vacate his race seat to make room for the well-funded Russian Vitaly Petrov. But Trulli, now 38, says Fernandes promised to pay him in full for 2012. Italy's Autosprint says Trulli is angry with Fernandes for not paying him, since the Malaysian entrepreneur has not only increased Caterham's budget, but also that of his English football club […]
Caterham owner Tony Fernandes has confirmed that his team will stick with Renault engines next season. Caterham has been powered by the French squad since 2011 and will continue their partnership into the new era in 2014. Caterham's eponymous road car company has a partnership with Renault subsidiary Alpine that will see the companies collaborating to produce sports cars. "We have a car partnership with Renault," said Fernandes. "Our F1 car is going to be replicated in a road car, so you see a Renault […]
Caterham reserve driver Heikki Kovalainen insists that he currently has no race plans as he prepares for his Formula 1 return in Bahrain. Kovalainen raced in the sport for six seasons, winning the 2008 Hungarian Grand Prix for McLaren. The Finn moved to Caterham but his contract was not renewed at the end of 2012. But on Wednesday it was announced that Kovalainen will return to the team as a reserve driver, competing in FP1 in Bahrain and Spain. "There's no plans to race at […]
Heikki Kovalainen has rejoined Caterham as a reserve driver. The Finn raced for the team between 2010 and 2012, having previously competed for Renault and McLaren. Kovalainen will take part in first practice sessions in Bahrain and Spain, in order to assist the development of the Caterham CT03. "It’s obviously great news that I’ll be on track in Bahrain and Spain and I’m really looking forward to getting back to work and helping the team as much as I can," said Kovalainen. "I’ll be taking […]
Caterham has hit back at paddock rumours team founder Tony Fernandes has lost interest in the F1 project and could soon shut it down. Late last year, Malaysian entrepreneur Fernandes handed over the role as team boss to Cyril Abiteboul. And the decision to replace the highly rated Heikki Kovalainen with a second pay-driver for 2013 was seen by some as an acknowledgement that Caterham is unlikely to ever make the giant leap from the back even to the middle of the grid. Indeed, the […]
Caterham Group co-chairman Tony Fernandes has said that his team should be able to fight in 2013, but that the main focus will be on moving up the grid when the new rule changes arrive in 2014. Caterham unveiled their CT03 on Tuesday morning in the pit lane in Jerez, with new drivers Charles Pic and Giedo van der Garde. "The team has produced a car that is an evolution of the 2012 car, building on that platform to give us a chance of continuing […]
