Massa pleased after 'very special day'

Felipe Massa said that his first day of running with Williams was a 'special' experience. Massa has switched to Williams after eight years with Ferrari and set the second fastest time, having completed 47 laps at Jerez. "It was a very special day, the first day I drove with a different engine in Formula 1," he said after his first experience of the Williams FW36. "We didn’t do as many laps as we expected to do. Unfortunately many times you have a little issue and […]

Button tops day two as Mercedes rack up miles

Jenson Button set the fastest time on the second day of running at Jerez. Button's time of 1.24.165s was comfortably faster than Kimi Raikkonen's time on Tuesday, although lap times remain unrepresentative. The day was originally set aside for wet weather running as overnight rain left the circuit moist, with tractors brought in to add more water to the track. The delay in soaking the circuit meant that the session started 17 minutes later than planned. While the morning was undertaken in damp conditions, it […]

Raikkonen tops subdued first day of testing

Kimi Raikkonen topped the first day of winter testing at a subdued Jerez. As Formula 1 entered into a new era, several teams encountered issues with their new cars. Pacesetter Raikkonen stopped the F14 T on its first lap out on track, while Force India's Sergio Perez encountered similar difficulties. Lewis Hamilton was the morning pacesetter in his Mercedes W05 and had completed more laps than any of his rivals when his front wing failed on the pit straight. Hamilton was powerless to prevent his […]

Anticipation high at Jerez as opening test begins

Interest in this week's opening test of the groundbreaking 2014 season is near-unprecedented. The new rules, spearheaded by the new V6 hybrid turbo 'power units', have attracted 25 television networks and 160 accredited journalists to Jerez, where the odd-nosed grid for the new year is taking shape. Unfortunately for some, the weather might not play along, as dark clouds were gathering above southern Spain late on Monday, ahead of the first of four days of testing. F1's continuing tyre supplier Pirelli is well prepared, and […]

Pic admits 2014 Caterham seat not secure

A month ahead of official pre-season testing for 2014, Charles Pic has admitted his future remains far from certain. It has been rumoured in recent days and weeks that, ahead of the new season, the Lagardere-backed Frenchman's sponsorship haul might not be as strong as that of his 2013 teammate Giedo van der Garde. At the same time, there have been rumours Caterham might be considering a new driver to replace 23-year-old Pic, such as the Swedish rookie Marcus Ericsson. And Finland's Turun Sanomat newspaper […]

Rosberg reveals tyre failure in Bahrain testing

Nico Rosberg on Thursday threw the spotlight back onto F1's controversial tyre supplier Pirelli. Albeit very briefly, the German told his 432,000 followers on Twitter that he suffered a failure at high speed as he tests next year's tyres in Bahrain. "Just spun at full speed, 320kmh on Bahrain straight, cause my tyre blew up without warning," Rosberg said. "Thanks to that need to get some toilet paper now," the Mercedes driver added in the tweet that was promptly deleted. A number of teams are […]

Maldonado joins Grosjean at Lotus

Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado has been named as Lotus' driver for the 2014 season alongside France's Romain Grosjean, the team officially confirmed on Friday. Maldonado has spent three seasons with Williams, winning the Spanish Grand Prix in 2012, but only notched up one point this season with his 10th place in Hungary. The 28-year-old, supported by state-owned Venezuelan oil and gas giant PDVSA, announced at the start of the month he was quitting the team, leading to talks with Lotus and Sauber. "It is a fantastic […]

Vettel laments tyre situation

Reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel was left to lament the tyre situation that left him missing parts of practice for the Brazilian Grand Prix. Vettel completed only 27 laps across the two 90 minute sessions in order to preserve wet weather tyres. The German was also left to rue the wet conditions, as they prevented teams trialling Pirelli's 2014 development tyres. "We knew it would be wet today and might be tricky," he said. "The main loss from the rain was that we didn’t run […]

Valsecchi angered by Lotus decision

Davide Valsecchi says he is angry at Lotus's decision to overlook him for the vacant seat for the final two round of 2013. Kimi Raikkonen withdrew from the races in America and Brazil to undergo back surgery, but Lotus opted to hire Heikki Kovalainen rather than reserve driver Valsecchi. Valsecchi, the 2012 GP2 champion, believes it's a 'tragedy' that he was not selected. "It’s a huge blow to me. From the sporting point of view it’s a tragedy," he said. "It makes me angry to […]
