Vandoorne gets 15-place grid penalty

McLaren disappointed with double DNF

It was a short-lived Chinese Grand Prix for the McLaren-Honda team at the Shanghai International Circuit as none of its drivers managed to finish the race due to reliability issues. Stoffel Vandoorne says McLaren has made encouraging progress with its MP4-31 since he made his Formula 1 debut at last month's Bahrain Grand Prix. McLaren reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne will pilot the squad's MP4-31 during in-season testing next week. Vandoorne, the reigning GP2 champion, will drive the car during testing next Wednesday, after regular driver Jenson Button runs on Tuesday. Fernando Alonso will not participate in the Bahrain Grand Prix on medical grounds following his accident in Australia, with McLaren reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne set to deputise. McLaren test and reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne will compete in Japan's Super Formula championship for Dandelion Racing, the manufacturer confirmed on Friday. Vandoorne dominated the GP2 Series in 2015 and was promoted to the role of test and reserve driver at McLaren, with whom he has been affiliated for several years.
