As part of our season review, here is the 2013 Formula 1 season from the mouths of those involved in the sport: the humorous, the memorable, the radio messages, and those, with hindsight, that some surely regret... “That competitiveness is going to keep growing and I guess we'll see more of it this year. But I'll try to contain it so I don't come across like a dickhead or something!” – Daniel Ricciardo reveals his intentions to improve in 2013. “This year's car is the […]
Felipe Massa believes that he can "bring a lot" to any team that he signs for in 2014. Massa is currently out of contract at the end of the season, having been replaced at Ferrari by Kimi Raikkonen. Massa has raced for Ferrari since 2006 and reckons that this experience can be a valuable asset for any team. "I think my experience matters more," Massa said. "Everyone knows what I can bring to a team, especially at a time when everything will start from zero […]
Sebastian Vettel insists he is not taking the recent booing personally. At Spa, Monza and most recently Singapore, and also in Britain for June's British grand prix, the reigning world champion was the obvious target of the spectators' verbal disapproval. But the Red Bull driver told Germany's Sport Bild he is not taking it personally. "If the sport is your passion and you have a favourite driver, it's obvious you support them," German Vettel, 26, said. "So that means you're against his opponents. I can […]
The days of constantly-changing helmet livery designs in Formula One could be coming to an end. This weekend, world champion Sebastian Vettel - who regularly changes the design of his helmet - is wearing a livery that shines like a disco ball under the Singapore lights. Even Lewis Hamilton, who usually fields the same Senna-like yellow helmet, is showing off a special white design this weekend. But the constant chopping-and-changing is set to be stopped by F1's governing body. Germany's Bild newspaper reports that the […]
Colourful water slides, 'Bernie avenue' and the first race behind the Iron Curtain. It must be the Hungarian Grand Prix...
Red Bull needs to clear some hurdles before the Austrian grand prix can go ahead in 2014. The energy drink company and Bernie Ecclestone announced on Tuesday that an agreement to stage a race mid next year at the former A1-Ring, now called the Red Bull Ring, has been reached. APA news agency said the "provisional" deal is for at least seven consecutive Austrian grands prix. But Red Bull's statement on Tuesday admitted the deal is "on condition of approval by the required authorities". One […]
Bernie Ecclestone has slammed the regulations after packed grandstands at Silverstone on Friday watched little more than falling rain during practice. Because the teams were saving rain tyres, safeguarding precious new bodywork pieces and expecting better weather for the rest of the British grand prix weekend, the drivers stayed in their garages for the bulk of the opening 90-minute session. At the same time, a two hour's drive away, the FIA's World Motor Sport Council was meeting at Goodwood, where a new rule allocating drivers […]
Some members of F1's travelling circus admitted their frustration at the end of the Chinese grand prix. "It's quite excruciating," McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh is quoted by the Telegraph, "trying to save tyres non-stop from start to finish. "It feels painful, and however bad it is for me, it must be a lot worse if you have to drive like that." He is referring to the new situation caused by Pirelli's rapidly-wearing 2013 tyres. Some hail the new era that stands in stark contrast […]
Swamps, peculiar pit buildings and some smog. It's on to Round 3 of the championship at the Shanghai International Circuit
The calmer tones of F1's new-generation turbo V6 engines could be artificially enhanced, according to Bernie Ecclestone. The F1 chief executive is worried the sport will lose some of its appeal to fans when next year's engines fail to live up to the dramatic noise of the current V8s. The grand prix circuit promoters, led by Australia's Ron Walker, are also worried. "As Bernie will attest," Walker told F1 business journalist Christian Sylt, "it (the V6) sounds like a lawnmower engine, and we will be […]
The seven times world champion joins a star studded list of names in Thailand this weekend
F1 cars could be fitted with a mandatory engine cover 'shark fin' next year. The move would be designed to help television viewers and trackside spectators easier identify the drivers, in the era of deep cockpits and ever-changing helmet designs. Mercedes tested the 'shark fin' solution at the recent Magny Cours test. On the German squad's test car, the shark fin featured the drivers' race number, his national flag and his three-letter F1 initial. "The teams have been working for some time on how to […]
