Seven times world champion Michael Schumacher is in a 'critical condition' in hospital following a skiing accident on Sunday. Schumacher was airlifted to hospital in Grenoble following an accident in the French resort of Meribel. Initial reports early on Sunday afternoon stated that 44-year-old Schumacher suffered a head injury but was conscious following the accident. But his condition deteriorated and late on Sunday evening, Schumacher's management released a statement to German news agency SID saying that he was admitted to hospital and 'has a head […]
Nico Hulkenberg, the new key to unlocking the remainder of the 2014 'silly season', has not signed a deal yet. That was the claim on Tuesday of his manager Werner Heinz, amid reports German Hulkenberg has now committed to a team for next season. Lotus boss Eric Boullier on Monday was quoted as saying 26-year-old Hulkenberg was the team's "choice" 2014 pick, but he has also been linked to Force India, McLaren, or even staying at Sauber. "I think Hulkenberg is still a little undecided, […]
Former HRT boss Colin Kolles tried to blackmail Mercedes chief Toto Wolff earlier this year, it has emerged. We reported earlier that a conversation between Austrian Wolff and a then-unnamed former F1 team boss was "secretly recorded" and then threatened to be used against him. Bild newspaper had said Wolff spoke negatively about his own boss, Ross Brawn, colleague Niki Lauda, and also Daimler chairman Dieter Zetsche, whilst divulging details of his clashing co-ownership of the Williams team. A subsequent report by the magazine Sport […]
The 'T-word' was still the big topic of conversation as the F1 world congregated in Monaco on Wednesday. But the big paddock whisper is that changes to Pirelli's 2013 tyres will be only minor in Montreal next month and beyond. According to the strong and widespread rumour, the only minor change will be to the rear tyres -- which is good news for Ferrari and Lotus, and not-so-good for Mercedes and Red Bull. "Anything else would be unfair," Lotus' Kimi Raikkonen is quoted by Auto […]
Toto Wolff, the new Mercedes co-owner and director, has played down reports of a growing rift between the team's German and British factions. After German Nico Rosberg was ordered by Ross Brawn to stay behind Briton Lewis Hamilton in Malaysia, Austrians Wolff and Niki Lauda admitted their disapproval. But RTL now quotes Wolff as saying: "The decision was unpopular, but right." The incident is being compared to the situation at Red Bull, where team bosses tried - but ultimately failed - to impose a 'hold […]
Lewis Hamilton claims McLaren offered him more money than Mercedes for 2013. Ultimately, the 2008 world champion opted to switch camps, with most in the paddock believing he wanted to fly the roost, make more money and enjoy a lighter off-track load. Interestingly, however, Hamilton has told the German newsmagazine Focus that "McLaren's offer (for 2013) was a bit more lucrative" than Mercedes'. "I would have earned more there (at McLaren)," he insisted. The German news agency SID estimates Hamilton's new Mercedes retainer at EUR […]
Adrian Sutil is set to return to Formula One with Force India this season. Sutil, who sat out 2012 in the wake of the Eric Lux assault affair, has beaten hot contender Jules Bianchi to become Paul di Resta's new teammate. Force India is yet to confirm Sutil, although a decision is understood to have been made. "Sutil was in the McLaren simulator yesterday. As of Thursday, he will be in action for the last pre-season test in Barcelona", German media reported. "On 17 March […]
Nurburgring officials have reached an agreement with Bernie Ecclestone to host the German grand prix as scheduled in July. That is the claim of the German newspapers Allgemeine Zeitung and Rhein Zeitung, following a long-running 'on again, off again' saga surrounding the fortunes of the financially beleaguered Nurburgring. Mere hours before the latest reports, which were confirmed by Rhineland-Palatinate state spokeswoman Monika Fuhr, F1 chief executive Ecclestone had admitted the Nurburgring's future was still clouded. "It's all a bit messy," he was quoted by the […]
Robert Kubica looks set to return to full-time competitive action in 2013. Multiple media reports, including German's Sport Bild and also SID news agency, claim the former BMW and Renault driver will contest the European Rally Championship (ERC) at the wheel of a Ford Fiesta. SID said the Pole, who has still has limited use of his right arm in the wake of his February 2011 rally crash, has received clearance to enter the Fiesta with modified controls. "It would be incredible if Robert came […]
Mark Webber walked out of the official FIA press conference after Sunday's Indian grand prix. The incident occurred at the tail end of the media formalities at the Buddh circuit, when not a single question from the floor was addressed to the Australian. So, when Bild newspaper's Frank Schneider asked title contenders Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel what they would each like from one another, Vettel turned to Alonso and grinned: "Ah, no, you have a cap. "I was just about to say his cap, […]
Daimler chairman Dieter Zetsche has invited Michael Schumacher to stay in the Mercedes family in a non-racing role. "My personal wish is that he (Schumacher) remains a partner of our enterprise after his active time in the Mercedes cockpit," he is quoted by the Bild am Feiertag newspaper. Actually, it is believed the seven time world champion - having been told he is being replaced for 2013 by Lewis Hamilton - is weighing up his options elsewhere on next year's grid. But Mercedes' motor racing […]
Michael Schumacher may not be returning to retirement. Much like in 2006, when Ferrari replaced him with Kimi Raikkonen, the seven time world champion has now been elbowed out at Mercedes to make room for Lewis Hamilton. Some expect the 43-year-old to now return to retirement, or take up a job offer on Mercedes' management side. But Schumacher has also been linked with Sauber, whose Sergio Perez will move to McLaren next year to replace Hamilton. Schumacher's manager Sabine Kehm was spotted in conversation with […]
