Mercedes eyes second Constructors' crown

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff says that the outfit heads into this weekend's Russian Grand Prix optimistic that it can secure a second straight Constructors' Championship. Mercedes clinched the 2014 teams' title in Russia last year and currently holds a 169 point lead over nearest rivals Ferrari. Mercedes requires a 172 point advantage over Ferrari after the race to clinch the title, meaning that it needs to gain three points on the Italian outfit, a feat Wolff is sure is achievable. "We return to Russia with […]

Rosberg adamant title fight not over

Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg is adamant that the title fight is not yet over, despite team-mate Lewis Hamilton holding a 48 point advantage with only five rounds remaining. Hamilton and Rosberg fought for the 2014 title until the final race in Abu Dhabi but this year the Briton has pulled clear and could wrap up a third crown as soon as the Mexican Grand Prix. Heading to this weekend's Russian Grand Prix, Rosberg insists that Hamilton has not yet won this year's title. "I'm not […]

Sochi organisers pleased with date change

Organisers of the Russian Grand Prix say that the change in the scheduling of the race from next year will boost the event. Formula 1 raced at the Sochi Autodrom for the first time last October and 2015's event will take place on the corresponding weekend later this year. From next year, Russia's race will take place on May 1, and organisers say that hosting the sport in the Spring should aid the event. "We welcome the decision of the World Motor Sport Council, and […]

Wolff: Mercedes win tinged with sadness

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has admitted that their 2014 title glory has been tinged with sadness following Jules Bianchi's accident in the Japanese Grand Prix. Wolff's squad claimed their 13th win of the year at the Russian Grand Prix to move into an unassailable lead at the top of the Constructors' standings, but Bianchi's accident, which has left him with a diffuse axonal injury, remains in their mind. "This is a great moment for our team but, first of all, we must not forget what […]

Supreme Hamilton wins it for Mercedes: Russian GP review

That Formula 1’s first visit to Russia will remembered for an awkward and politically fuelled pre-podium room reflects the lack of action on-track. As the injured Jules Bianchi remained prominent in everyone’s thoughts, Formula 1 delivered one of its most action-free races in several seasons. Pre-weekend comparisons of the Sochi Autodrom to the loathed Valencia Street Circuit didn’t bode well, but even so, Lewis Hamilton’s ninth win of the year was achieved with consummate ease, while rivals behind him also had a low-key time. Pirelli’s […]

Bottas 'surprised' by Rosberg move

Valtteri Bottas says he was surprised by the move which Nico Rosberg made during the Russian Grand Prix. Bottas was running in second place when Rosberg, recovering from an error on the first lap, made the DRS-assisted move on his rival into Turn Two. Bottas admits that his Prime tyres took to long to get up to their working range after his sole pit stop. "The beginning seemed to be very good and I was not far off from Lewis [Hamilton] and everything was going […]

Hamilton 'proud' of Mercedes title

Lewis Hamilton says he is 'proud' to have contributed to Mercedes's success in this year's Constructors' championship. Hamilton claimed his ninth win of the 2014 campaign in Russia to seal the crown for Mercedes - their first in the history of the sport. "It was a good, good day and an amazing weekend," he said. "I’m just so proud to have contributed to have worked with this great team, to get the first Constructors’ Championship for Mercedes-Benz. I could have only dreamed of that when […]

Toro Rosso pair lament race regression

Toro Rosso drivers Jean-Eric Vergne and Daniil Kvyat were left to lament a difficult race at the Russian Grand Prix, with neither driver scoring a point. Vergne and Kvyat both started inside the top 10 but were unable to match faster rivals and came home in 13th and 14th places respectively. The pair admitted that having to save fuel meant that they were unable to race their rivals. "It was an extremely frustrating race," said Vergne. "We have to understand why we had to save […]

Alonso says future is 'so obvious'

Fernando Alonso says his future is 'so obvious' after he finished in sixth position at the Russian Grand Prix. Alonso's future has remained unclear since management changes at Ferrari, with Sebastian Vettel set to move to the Italian team. With Alonso linked to a couple of teams, he says that negotiations are in their final stages. "My future is already set – or already set in my mind for some months," he told Sky Sports. "Now we are finalising everything, it is not a big […]

Magnussen: Race like a 'chilled out' Sunday drive

Kevin Magnussen says his Russian Grand Prix was akin to a 'chilled out Sunday drive' after he claimed his best finish since Australia. Magnussen made a strong start from 11th on the grid and finished in fifth place at the Sochi Autodrom. "I decided to go flat-out from the start, in an effort to make up as many positions as possible from my P11 grid slot, and it worked; I had a great lap one, and then moved up to P5 very quickly," he said. […]

Grosjean: Sutil contact a 'racing incident'

Romain Grosjean says that his contact with Adrian Sutil in the Russian Grand Prix was a racing incident. Grosjean and Sutil made contact at Turn Two, with the German driver tipped into a spin on the exit of the corner. Grosjean was deemed the guilty party and handed a five second stop and go penalty, but the Frenchman feels that the collision was merely a racing incident. "It was a straight-forward race aside from the incident with Adrian," he said. "He was on the softer […]
