Russian GP recap

Lewis Hamilton’s 70th F1 victory might not be one he’ll look back on as a career standout, with Mercedes boosting the championship leader to the top step ahead of team-mate Valtteri Bottas, but as Formula 1 Managing Director, Motorsport Ross Brawn explains, team orders are an integral part of the sport, and with five races left and a maximum 125 points up for grabs, the decision to make the switch was the right one. In parc ferme after the Russian Grand Prix, it was noticeable that none […]

Russian GP in numbers

Mercedes’s untouchable total, another milestone for Kimi Räikkönen, a surprising 2018 digit and a perfect points record in Russia for two likely contenders and one from outside the usual record club – Sochi’s intense fifth grand prix threw up some special stats. 5 wins for Mercedes at Sochi Autodrom. Lewis Hamilton’s third win at the track, allied to wins for Nico Rosberg in 2016 and Valtteri Bottas last year maintains Mercedes’ unbeaten record in Russia. Bottas’ second place yesterday saw the Silver Arrows secure their […]

Hamilton:

In front of the packed grandstands of the Sochi Autodrom Lewis Hamilton has won the Russian Grand Prix ahead of his team mate Valtteri Bottas, after Mercedes applied team orders in order to secure Hamilton's victory. On lap 26 Bottas was told by the pit wall to let Hamilton through as he had a blister on his tyre and was under threat from Vettel. Bottas obeyed but was not pleased and he was back on his radio on the last laps asking to swap back […]

Steve Nielsen Q & A

On Sunday afternoon in Sochi, Russia, F1 and its teams will pack up over 750 tonnes of crucial race equipment and a little over 72 hours later have it assembled and ready to go again – 8,000km away in Suzuka, Japan. Formula 1 Sporting Director Steve Nielsen reveals how F1 keeps the show on the road. Q: We’ve already had a triple-header this year and now we have, what on the surface at least, looks like a tricky back-to-back from Russia to Japan. How complex is this […]

Was victory possible by pitting Vettel sooner?

The Russian Grand Prix was always likely to be one of those races where, with the new 2017 combination of high drag cars and low degradation tyres, overtaking would be extremely difficult and strategy games equally so. In fact it was only the fourth race in F1 history to feature no overtaking moves after the opening lap skirmishes. The key question is whether Ferrari could have manoeuvred Sebastian Vettel into a position to win the race, after losing the lead at the start to Bottas, […]

Bottas:

Valtteri Bottas claimed his first Formula 1 victory in a tense Russian Grand Prix that saw him jumping the two Ferraris off the start, then edging out Sebastian Vettel in a nail-bitting, race-long battle. The Finn reckons the result came as a confirmation of his talent and will give him lots of confidence for the future. His team mate, Lewis Hamilton produced a battling drive to finish P4 after struggling with overheating throughout the race. "It’s going to take a while to sink in. Normally […]

Toro Rosso struggled with speed

Sochi wasn’t an easy race weekend for Scuderia Toro Rosso as its drivers only managed to score one point during the Russian Grand Prix, due to lack of speed on the circuit’s long straights and a bad qualifying session on Saturday. Both cars made it to the end of the race but only Carlos Sainz managed to finish in points (P 10), while his team mate Daniil Kvyat saw the chequered flag on 12th. Toro Rosso is confident that the upgrades planned for Barcelona will get the team back into […]

Ferrari ensured double podium

After a front row lock-out in qualifying, Ferrari drivers managed to get both cars on the podium finishing second and third respectively in a Russian Grand Prix that was settled in two moments; the start and the final lap. Thanks to this result Sebastian Vettel extends his lead in the Drivers’ classification over Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton, who finished fourth, to 13 points. In total, Scuderia Ferrari walks off with 33 points as Kimi Raikkonen also made it to the podium for the first time this season.  “I […]

Hulkenberg scores Renault's second point finish

Renault Sport Formula One Team secured its second points-scoring finish of 2017 with a robust eighth place from Nico Hülkenberg in the Russian Grand Prix at the Sochi Autodrom. Hulkenberg started eighth then ran a mammoth 40-lap stint on his qualifying Ultrasort tyres before changing to the Supersoft tyres for a final 12-lap bid to wrestle seventh place from Esteban Ocon.  “I’m really happy with the strategy we ran today; there wasn’t too much left from the tyres at the end of that first stint, but […]

Alonso: “It’s tough, it’s frustrating

A hugely disappointing afternoon for the whole McLaren-Honda team after Fernando Alonso failed to start the Russian Grand Prix.  The Spaniard suffered an ERS software fault on the parade lap, and, despite attempting to restart it during the lap, he was unable to make it back to the pits and was left stranded on the circuit. “It’s tough, it’s frustrating – every weekend is the same", says Alonso. “My power unit didn’t have the usual power during the formation lap, so my engineer told me to […]

Bottas claims maiden F1 victory

Valtteri Bottas won the Russian Grand Prix to score his maiden Formula One victory by .617 of a second over Scuderia Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel. The result came after 81 races in Formula One, but only his fourth with Mercedes. The Finn took over Nico Rosberg's seat at Mercedes, after The German retired at the end of the 2016 season. Bottas' triumph also kept Mercedes’ record at Sochi Autodrom intact, as the manufacturer won all the Russian GP to date, in 2014 and 2015 with Lewis Hamilton and the 2016 race with […]
