Schumacher exit best thing for Mercedes admits Lauda

Replacing Michael Schumacher with Lewis Hamilton was the right thing for Mercedes. That is the claim not only of F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone, but also the German team's own Niki Lauda. A year ago, Lauda was instrumental in convincing Lewis Hamilton to leave McLaren and replace the seven time world champion, Schumacher. "It was the right decision to sign Lewis," Ecclestone told Germany's Auto Bild. "He woke the team up. And he can push the other driver (Nico Rosberg) in a way Michael couldn't […]

Mallya wants Silverstone podium

Q&A conducted by the Official F1 Website Q: Vijay, both Force India drivers finished in the points in Valencia. Why did the team prove so successful last weekend? Vijay Mallya: Well, the car was performing great all weekend long. In fact I was hoping for a better qualifying result, but in Q3 maybe both overdrove the car, locked up the wheels etc. So we started eighth and tenth while I was actually hoping to start in the top five. We knew that this season’s unpredictability has […]

Red Bull isolated as rivals push for cost-cutting rules

Red Bull has been isolated from F1's other teams, as the FIA is asked to step in and police their cost-cutting efforts. Last year, there remained suspicions the energy drink owned team - the winner of the past two world championships - flouted the 'resource restriction agreement' (RRA). But the agreement was only an initiative of the teams' trade union FOTA, which has now essentially collapsed. Moreover, the agreement includes only financial sanctions for breaches, and Red Bull was never penalised anyway -- Ferrari's Luca […]

Marko: Rivals wanted to curb Red Bull's aero dominance

Red Bull pulled out of FOTA because the other teams were trying to curb the team's dominance. That is the inkling of the energy drink company's F1 consultant Dr Helmut Marko, referring to the failed talks over the next cost-limiting resource restriction agreement (RRA). Red Bull had been accused of breaching some of the articles in the existing agreement, and talks finally collapsed at the Brazil season finale. Marko is quoted by the Kleine Zeitung newspaper as claiming that Red Bull's dominance was being specifically […]

Marko: Red Bull not signing proposed cost agreement

Dr Helmut Marko has bad news for the FOTA alliance and the next inter-team resource restriction agreement (RRA). Red Bull, accused of not sticking to the existing cost-limiting deal, is not signing the new one that is currently on the table. "It is totally full of holes. Anyone can simply circumvent the rules. So we are not signing that," the team's consultant Marko is quoted by Bild newspaper. The paddock pressure on Red Bull is rising, with some rivals complaining loudly that the potential collapse […]

Abu Dhabi F1 talks 'more important than race'

Martin Whitmarsh would be happy if the forthcoming negotiations over F1's future results in the teams owning a slice of the sport. With the bitter political battle of 2009 still in memory, many of F1's paddock players are looking nervously towards the expiry next year of the crucial tripartite Concorde Agreement. As ever, everyone wants a bigger slice of the lucrative pie. But this time around, talk of a 'breakaway' series is unlikely to be used as a weapon -- perhaps because the existing agreement […]

Red Bull's Marko hits back at latest cheating charges

Red Bull has fended off the latest round of speculation, as tales of cheating and overspending refuse to go away. Germany's Bild newspaper said the culprits of the renewed allegations about the back to back world champions are McLaren and Ferrari, reportedly concerned that the FOTA cost-limiting agreement has not been honoured. "Ludicrous," Dr Helmut Marko, Red Bull's motor racing consultant, hit back. "It is the jealously of poor losers, throwing mud and hoping something sticks." The major German daily on Saturday published some previously […]

F1 'distrust' threatens cost-curbing agreement

The inter-team agreement to curb costs in formula one is at a crossroads as the latest rumours sweep across the paddock. First it was Red Bull, but now Mercedes is the subject of the latest speculation about teams breaking the gentleman's agreement known as the FOTA-sponsored resource restriction agreement (RRA). The Mercedes rumours have gained strength since Mercedes signed Geoff Willis and Aldo Costa to join Mercedes' existing technical bosses Ross Brawn and Bob Bell. "Each of the teams and team principals continue to assure […]
