'Shocked' Perez in a 'difficult situation'

Sergio Perez says that McLaren's decision not to retain him for 2014 came as a shock. Perez was informed earlier in the week that he would not be racing for the team next season and McLaren has since confirmed that Kevin Magnussen will race alongside Jenson Button in 2014. "I learnt a couple of days before you found out," he said. "It was a very late decision. I had no idea, it just came as a shock to me because the team was always giving […]

Maldonado 'very happy' to leave Williams

Pastor Maldonado says he is 'very happy' at the prospect of leaving Williams, believing that he delivered more to the team than they did for him. Williams confirmed on Monday that Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas will race for the team in 2014, ending their three year association with Maldonado. Maldonado won the Spanish Grand Prix for the team last year, but in both 2011 and 2013 the Venezuelan has scored just a single point. "I am very happy," he said. "Since a couple of […]

Ferrari are the bad losers - Horner

Christian Horner has issued a feisty counter-punch, after Fernando Alonso suggested Red Bull were bad losers. Ferrari's Alonso had been asked in Monaco about Red Bull's consistent complaints about the 2013 Pirelli tyres. "When you win in an easy way for a few years, you can forget how to lose," the Spaniard had said. But Briton Horner, the Red Bull team boss, insisted Ferrari also has a few lessons to learn about how to lose. Asked if Red Bull are bad losers, Horner told Catalunya […]

China reserve role for Da Costa

The new cream of Red Bull's driver development programme is continuing his steady push towards Formula One. For well over a decade, even before the energy drink company had even one F1 team let alone two, Red Bull has been backing promising young drivers for a future on the grid. The latest are Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne, who have just begun their second - and some would say decisive - seasons at Faenza based Toro Rosso. Undoubtedly, the Red Bull youngster next in the […]

Lotus liked for being 'natural team' says Lopez

Lotus is happy to let Kimi Raikkonen just be himself, owner Gerard Lopez has revealed. En route to his first victory since returning to F1 last year, the laconic Finn told his race engineer Simon Rennie in Abu Dhabi to "Just leave me alone, I know what I'm doing." Lopez told Finland's Turun Sanomat newspaper: "Kimi is Kimi. It was just what he felt at that moment. "Kimi is certainly the most honest guy in F1. That's why so many people find him so refreshing. […]

Salo: Raikkonen's radio frustration 'normal'

Mika Salo has backed his countryman Kimi Raikkonen's radio attitude en route to victory in Abu Dhabi last Sunday. The 2007 world champion's growing frustration with his engineer throughout his chase for Lotus' first win of the season culminated in him saying "leave me alone". But Salo, another Finnish driver, insisted Raikkonen's attitude is actually "pretty normal". "During a race you are so concentrated that you are fully aware of the situation if you're in the lead and you see a red car in the […]

Horner: Lotus need to control Grosjean

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner believes that Lotus must control Romain Grosjean, after the Frenchman was involved in another first lap collision. Grosjean hit Mark Webber's sidepod, spinning the Australian and sending him to the rear of the field. Webber later called Grosjean a 'first lap nutcase' and reportedly stormed down to the Lotus hospitality unit at Suzuka to express his feelings to his rival. Horner added to the criticism of Grosjean. "Hopefully he will have a good look in the mirror after this […]

Force India, Ecclestone, deny Bahrain GP boycott

Force India deputy boss Bob Fernley has dismissed reports the Silverstone based team could pull out of the controversial Bahrain grand prix. Two members of the team were allowed to return to Europe this week following a Molotov cocktail attack en route from the Sakhir circuit to the hotel. There were high-level meetings involving Force India on Thursday, sparking speculation the entire team could follow its frightened members back to the UK. But Fernley, admitting that security has been ramped up after the incident, is […]

Whitmarsh sure nose concept not McLaren mistake

Martin Whitmarsh has played down fears McLaren has made a crucial mistake by overlooking the 'step nose' trend that will dominate the 2012 grid. With the new Mercedes having now broken cover, and Pedro de la Rosa revealing that HRT's 2012 car also has a step nose, famous British team McLaren is all alone in keeping a smooth aerodynamic line from the end of the monocoque to the tip of the nose. Every other team has decided that the best solution to the new rules […]
