Williams upbeat over wet weather progress

Williams' head of vehicle performance Rob Smedley is confident that the squad is making progress in low-speed corner and wet weather conditions, two aspects where the outfit has struggled across recent years. Williams has been among the outfits to challenge Mercedes since Formula 1's new regulations were introduced for 2014, but the team has struggled on some circuits, such as Monaco, as well as when rain strikes, as was demonstrated by its lack of pace when wet weather affected the British Grand Prix. While Williams […]

Williams hopeful of regular podium finishes

Williams is hopeful that it will be able to compete for podium finishes across the second half of the 2015 season, which begins in Belgium this week. Williams occupies third in the standings and has claimed two podiums so far in 2015, courtesy of Valtteri Bottas in Canada and Felipe Massa at the following event in Austria. Williams secured top three finishes in Belgium and Italy last year and the squad is optimistic that its current package will be suited to the demands of upcoming […]

Williams sure of Silverstone podium challenge

Williams is confident that it can continue its recent run of form at its home race in Britain this weekend, as it bids to claim another podium finish. Valtteri Bottas took third position in Canada to give Williams its first 2015 podium, while team-mate Felipe Massa finished in third place at the most recent event in Austria. Williams' head of vehicle performance Rob Smedley is optimistic that the FW37 will be well-suited to the characteristics of Silverstone and that another podium finish is up for […]

Smedley pleased with Williams mettle

Williams' Rob Smedley says he was pleased with the 'mettle' displayed by the squad during last weekend's Austrian Grand Prix. Felipe Massa capitalised on a mistake in the pits from Ferrari to jump ahead of Sebastian Vettel and secure his first podium of 2015, and Williams' second in succession. "It would be futile of me to say we didn’t get that podium via some good fortune as well but as people said in the past you make your own luck and we got ourselves into […]

Williams eyes Austria Ferrari challenge

Williams is confident that it can build on its performance at the Canadian Grand Prix by closing the gap to rivals Ferrari at this weekend's race in Austria. Williams has been comfortably the third best squad across the opening part of 2015 but secured its first podium of the campaign in Canada courtesy of third place for Valtteri Bottas. That result comes ahead of this weekend's race in Austria, where last year Williams locked out the front row of the grid before challenging Mercedes in […]

Williams fixed on maintaining third

Williams's primary focus for the remainder of 2014 is to beat Ferrari to third place in the Constructors' championship, according to head of vehicle performance Rob Smedley. Williams has enjoyed a revival in 2014 following a dismal 2013 campaign in which the Grove-based squad amassed just five points. This year, the outfit has claimed 177 points and five podium positions to lie third in the teams' table, 15 points ahead of Ferrari. Smedley says that their aim is now to resist Ferrari across the remainder […]

Williams: Spain an indication of 2014 form

Williams head of vehicle performance Rob Smedley reckons that the pecking order across the next couple of races will indicate the form book for the remainder of the season. Williams has enjoyed a revival after a dismal 2013 season as they sit in sixth place in the championship with 36 points. "Spain is a good leveller," said Smedley. "Getting back to Europe gives teams the opportunity to bring further upgrades, which we will also be doing. Barcelona and the following two or three races gives everyone […]

Smedley joins Williams from Ferrari

Rob Smedley has been confirmed in the newly-created of head of vehicle performance at Williams. Smedley has been Felipe Massa's race engineer since 2006 and has now made the move from Ferrari. Smedley will join Williams prior to April's Bahrain Grand Prix. Williams also confirmed that Richard Lockwood has joined the team from Marussia as head of race strategy. Smedley won't be Massa's race engineer at Williams

Felipe Massa will not be reuniting with his usual race engineer in 2014. There has been speculation that, because both Brazilian Massa and his well-known, long-time race engineer Rob Smedley are moving from Ferrari to Williams, they might reunite in their old working relationship at the Grove based team. But it is believed Briton Smedley, who has been at Ferrari for ten years and is famous for his big-brotherly radio banter with Massa, has accepted an engineering role with greater responsibility at Williams. Indeed, Williams […]
