Kovalainen responds to Briatore criticism

Heikki Kovalainen has responded to his former manager Flavio Briatore, after the Italian claimed Lotus should not have signed him. Drafted in to replace the injured Kimi Raikkonen for the last two races of 2013, fellow Finn Kovalainen initially impressed in Austin last weekend but finished the US grand prix a disappointing 15th. Briatore, Kovalainen's former manager and Renault team boss, reportedly observed that Lotus clearly got its choice wrong, and should have promoted reserve driver Davide Valsecchi instead. "The US grand prix showed that […]

Alonso would do more with Vettel's car - Hamilton

At the wheel of a Red Bull, Fernando Alonso's feats would be "far beyond" what Sebastian Vettel has achieved. That is the claim of Lewis Hamilton, despite having recently clarified his views about Vettel's dominance following suggestions he lacked respect for the German. "Feel the need to clarify my thoughts," he wrote on Twitter earlier this month. "Seb is great champion!" However, when asked by the Spanish sports daily AS if he would have won four titles at the wheel of Vettel's Red Bull, Briton […]

Watson: Mercedes should ban Hamilton's dog

Mercedes should ban Lewis Hamilton's dog from the paddock, according to former F1 driver John Watson. While the 2008 world champion insists he is enjoying his new freedoms after quitting McLaren, driver-turned-pundit Watson is making the link between Hamilton's lifestyle and his current struggles versus teammate Nico Rosberg. "There is no place for a dog in the F1 paddock," 67-year-old Watson told the Daily Express. "For one thing, it is not fair on the animal. It (also) shows that Mercedes are bending over too far […]

Ferrari joins Lotus in tyre tweak criticism

Ferrari has joined Lotus in criticising Pirelli's mid-season tyre tweak. Following early-season criticism, culminating in the furore after Barcelona recently, Pirelli announced it is making key changes to its controversial 2013 tyres for next month's Canadian grand prix and beyond. Lotus team boss Eric Boullier was the first to react, likening the change to widening football goals because one team was always striking the post. Now, in the anonymous 'Horse Whisperer' column posted on the official Ferrari website, Ferrari has lashed out at those who claim […]

Lotus F1 team boss Gerard Lopez says that he is pleased with Kimi Raikkonen's contribution to the team. Raikkonen returned to the sport in 2012 and finished in third place in the championship, dismissing accusations that the Finn would be unmotivated. "That makes me smile," Lopez told Gazzetta dello Sport. "I was sure it would be like this, Raikkonen put in a great work load to compliment his talent and the results are the fruit of that. Here he feels like he is being used […]

Montezemolo: Vettel next in line for 'number 1' Ferrari seat

Luca di Montezemolo on Thursday admitted reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel is next in line for Ferrari's 'number 1' race seat. "If, tomorrow, Fernando would withdraw for any reason - let's say he moves to Hawaii with his girlfriend - then I would want Vettel," laughed the fabled Maranello based team's president, according to Auto Motor und Sport. Spaniard Alonso, however, is tied up contractually for years -- and Ferrari is more than happy with him. "I'm incredibly happy with him," Montezemolo agreed. "He is […]

Lotus team principal Eric Bouiller has said that his team will be pushing as hard as possible to provide Kimi Raikkonen with a shot at the world title. Raikkonen lies third in the championship with 149 points, 45 behind leader Fernando Alonso. But Bouiller is insistent that the team is not giving up. When asked about the prospect of challenging Ferrari for third place in the Constructors Championship, the Frenchman was bullish. "Their package is fast but they are mainly relying on one driver. That […]

Paddock crowns Alonso greatest current driver

As he races away with the 2012 championship at the wheel of a still-inferior car, Fernando Alonso is being hailed almost universally within the F1 paddock. The season began disastrously for Ferrari with the ailing F2012, but as the technical boffins set to work on its weaknesses, the Spaniard at the wheel was always flawlessly consistent. Totally outclassed in Australia, he still finished fifth, he is the only driver to have won more than one grand prix so far, and Alonso has never been outside […]

FIA tells Vettel to mind his manners

Sebastian Vettel has been warned to watch his manners, according to Germany's Kolner Express newspaper. After Valencia, where following his retirement the Red Bull driver admitted he suspected a conspiracy, German motor sport association president Hans-Joachim Stuck said Vettel needed to be careful about being cited for "unsportsmanlike conduct". The Cologne tabloid Express said Vettel's theory […]
