Pirelli: 2013 tyre request was ignored

Formula 1 tyre supplier Pirelli says that a request over the maximum length of stints was rejected by the sport towards the end of the 2013 season. Sebastian Vettel suffered a tyre failure on the penultimate lap of the Belgian Grand Prix, having been attempting a one-stop strategy, and had run 27 laps on the Prime tyre up until that point. Vettel was critical of Pirelli after the race but the Italian company hit back, claiming that under a rejected 2013 proposal it would have […]

Pirelli trials 2016 prototype tyres

Formula 1 tyre supplier Pirelli says it was able to trial some new materials during the post-race test in Austria, which may be used in 2016. Mercedes, Ferrari and Toro Rosso aided Pirelli's development across the duration of the test as they undertook selected running of front and rear prototype tyres. The tyres included similar characteristics to the current range but had slightly different materials within them. "It was a slightly frustrating beginning to the test in Austria, with rain wiping out the opening morning," […]

Hembery surprised by Michelin's demands

Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery says he is surprised by the demands made by rival company Michelin ahead of the bidding process for the 2017-19 tyre contract. Pirelli has supplied tyres to Formula 1 since the start of the 2011 campaign but the FIA has opened up the tender process for the next three-year contract, with Michelin having submitted a bid. Michelin's proposal comes with the demand for Formula 1 to adopt 18-inch rims and Hembery, whose company has been adhering to a brief to […]

Pirelli confirms compounds for next races

Formula 1 tyre supplier Pirelli has confirmed the tyre compounds which will be used at the upcoming races. The Medium and Hard tyre will be used in Britain, in order to deal with the amount of energy put through the rubber at Silverstone. For the following three races, in Hungary, Belgium and Italy, the Soft and Medium tyres will be provided by Pirelli. The choices are the same as in 2014, bar Italy, where Pirelli has taken a more aggressive step compared to the Medium […]

FIA opens process for 2017 tyre deal

Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, has formally opened the process for tyre companies to register an interest in becoming the sole official tyre supplier from 2017, according to the Official F1 website. New Super Soft tyre set for Monaco debut

Pirelli's new Super Soft tyre will make its weekend debut at the Monaco Grand Prix, with the company saying usage of the compound will be crucial. Pirelli's Super Soft is the only new compound this year, with the changes offering greater resistance to graining and blistering compared to its 2014 counterpart, with a more even temperature distribution set to aid grip further. While the updated Super Soft tyre has been used by some teams during testing, it will be raced on for the first time […]

Pirelli announces tyres for next four races

Formula 1 tyre supplier Pirelli has announced the compounds which it will bring to the next four races. As in 2014, the two hardest tyres from the range - Medium and Hards - will be taken to the Spanish Grand Prix due to the high-energy loads which are put through the tyres. The tyres at the opposite end of the spectrum - the Super Soft and Softs - will be used in Monaco, Canada and Austria, mirroring the choices the Italian company made in 2014. […]

Pirelli anticipating more stops in Malaysia

Formula 1 tyre supplier Pirelli is expecting strategy to play a bigger part in this weekend's Malaysian Grand Prix, after the majority of drivers adopted a one stop strategy in Australia. Pirelli will bring the two hardest compounds - the Medium and Hard - to Sepang due to fast corners with big lateral loads, rough asphalt, high ambient temperatures and a bumpy surface. "The Australian Grand Prix two weeks ago confirmed what we saw in testing: lap times that are two seconds or more faster […]

Pirelli expecting record lap times in 2015

Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery says that lap records at some circuits this year may be challenged due to the increased performance of the 2015 cars. During last year's Australian Grand Prix, the fastest time during the third practice session was a 1:29.375, but this year that benchmark was lowered to a 1:27.867 during the same session - comparisons with qualifying is not possible due to 2014's wet running. Pirelli says that while a lot of the lap time is down to chassis and engine […]

The yellow-banded Soft tyres and white-banded Mediums will be used in Australia, China and Bahrain. The Medium, along with the orange-banded Hard tyres, will be available in Malaysia. F1 to challenge laptime records in 2015 says Hembery

Paul Hembery, official tyre supplier Pirelli's F1 chief, is expecting the field to speed up significantly in 2015. Last year, the Italian marque took a deliberately conservative approach to its 2014 rubber, having gone through a tumultuous 2013 and with the uncertainties of the new turbo V6 era in mind. As a result, and with the high-downforce, V8 powered era in the past, lap times last year generally suffered. "Last season," Hembery agreed, "the power unit manufacturers, the teams, and ourselves (Pirelli) learned a lot. […]

Pirelli alters tyre nominations for Brazil

Pirelli has changed its tyre nominations for next month's Brazilian Grand Prix amid concerns over safety. Pirelli initially chose the Medium and Hard compound tyres for the penultimate round of the season but has moved one step softer following safety fears, with Felipe Massa labelling the original choice as 'dangerous'. "After a meeting of the Tyre Working Group, the tyre nomination for the Brazilian Grand Prix has been changed, following Pirelli’s proposal and with the unanimous agreement of all the teams," confirmed Pirelli. "Although the […]
