Tombazis, Fry axed in Ferrari shake-up

Ferrari has announced a reshuffle of its Formula 1 team, with key figures Nikolas Tombazis and Pat Fry leaving the squad. Tombazis has been chief designer at Ferrari since 2006, while Fry took up a senior role with the squad after joining in 2010. James Allison's position as technical director has been strengthened and he will be supported by chief designer Simone Resta and Power Unit director Mattia Binotto. New Team Principal Maurizio Arrivabene will head a newly founded Commercial department, with Press Officer Renato […]

Ferrari now working on three F1 cars

Even Ferrari's huge resources are being tested in 2012, as the famous Italian team reportedly works on three different cars simultaneously. That is the claim of the Spanish sports daily Marca, amid news the once-struggling F2012 car will enjoy yet another significant upgrade for the streets of Valencia this weekend. The report said Ferrari will use a new front wing and floor at the European grand prix, whilst also rolling out upgrades to the rear wing and exhausts. "It's been intense over the past few […]

Whiting says 2012 exhaust layouts 'legal'

Charlie Whiting has given the 2012 cars at the Jerez test this week an early clean bill of health. It was reported the FIA's technical delegate decided to attend the opening test of the 2012 pre-season amid speculation the teams may have overstepped the mark with their new exhaust layouts. Exhaust-blown diffusers have been banned for this season, but the early signs were that teams had been clever in their interpretation of the new rules to maintain an aerodynamic benefit. "At the moment they're all […]

Gene: Ferrari suspension not seen in F1 since 2001

A feature of the 2012 Ferrari car has not been seen in Formula 1 for more than a decade, test driver Marc Gene has confirmed. While the 'stepped' noses have been grabbing all the media's attention, arguably more noteworthy is Ferrari's decision to design its F2012 around 'pullrod' front suspension. While some F1 teams have been using pullrod suspension at the rear of their cars, it has been essentially absent from the front since the 80s and 90s. "The system seeks to lower the centre […]

New Ferrari to borrow ideas from rival teams

Ferrari's 2012 car will borrow some ideas from Red Bull and other rival teams in formula one. That is the admission of chief designer Nikolas Tombazis, who is heading the project of what has been described as an "aggressive" change of direction for the famous Italian team. But recently in Korea, Ferrari ran a 2012-style new wing that some observers analysed as similar to the philosophy seen this year in Red Bull's dominant car. "One can not ignore the competition, nor that Red Bull wins […]

Ferrari test 2012 front wing in Korea

Ferrari is testing a new front wing in Korea practice this weekend in line with the aggressive philosophy of its 2012 car. Italian and Spanish media reports have revealed that Maranello's next single seater is known internally as '663'. Italiaracing reports that the wing tested in Korea on Friday is "inspired by Red Bull's design". Designer Nikolas Tombazis confirmed recently that the front wing "represents a different approach in terms of how it works". "We can therefore try and learn as much as possible right […]

Newey: 2012 Red Bull to surprise F1 paddock

Red Bull's 2012 car will "surprise" the F1 paddock, its famous designer Adrian Newey has been quoted as saying by a Finnish newspaper. Already this week, Ferrari's chief designer Nikolas Tombazis has revealed that next year's single seater is "fairly different" to the current 150 Italia and could provoke a "wow factor" when it is launched. But the same is also true of Newey's RB8, according to Turun Sanomat newspaper, despite the current Red Bull being an evolution of the 2009 concept. Blown diffusers aside, […]

Ferrari: 2012 car will be aggressive

Ferrari's chief designer Nikolas Tombazis says that an aggressive approach towards the Scuderia's 2012 challenger should set them in good stead for the start of next season. Ferrari's F150* Italia was slow out of the box with many commenting on it's similarity to their 2010 challenger. "I hope the results will speak for themselves when we launch the car and more importantly, as we tackle the first few races on the calendar," Tombazis said on Ferrari's website. "A more aggressive approach has come about as […]
