Vettel 'can live' with booing

Sebastian Vettel insists he is not taking the recent booing personally. At Spa, Monza and most recently Singapore, and also in Britain for June's British grand prix, the reigning world champion was the obvious target of the spectators' verbal disapproval. But the Red Bull driver told Germany's Sport Bild he is not taking it personally. "If the sport is your passion and you have a favourite driver, it's obvious you support them," German Vettel, 26, said. "So that means you're against his opponents. I can […]

F1 considering ban on helmet livery changes

The days of constantly-changing helmet livery designs in Formula One could be coming to an end. This weekend, world champion Sebastian Vettel - who regularly changes the design of his helmet - is wearing a livery that shines like a disco ball under the Singapore lights. Even Lewis Hamilton, who usually fields the same Senna-like yellow helmet, is showing off a special white design this weekend. But the constant chopping-and-changing is set to be stopped by F1's governing body. Germany's Bild newspaper reports that the […]

Vettel denies Ricciardo unwise choice for 2014

Sebastian Vettel has played down suggestions Red Bull's rivals have put the world champions on the back foot with their driver lineups for 2014. Ferrari plans to field the all-star lineup of Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen, and Mercedes' pairing of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg is arguably the strongest of 2013. Red Bull, on the other hand, although counting again on the likely four-time world champion Vettel next year, is replacing the experienced Mark Webber with the graduating Toro Rosso driver Daniel Ricciardo. With […]

Montezemolo says Alonso will benefit from Raikkonen's return

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo reckons current driver Fernando Alonso will benefit when former driver Kimi Raikkonen returns to the team next season. Raikkonen raced for Ferrari between 2007 and 2009 but was paid off a year early and joined the World Rally Championship. Raikkonen returned to Formula 1 at the start of 2012 with Lotus and last week Ferrari confirmed that the Finn will race for them in 2014 and 2015. Di Montezemolo sees parallels between the return of Raikkonen with that of Niki […]

Even with Raikkonen, Alonso still ‘number 1’ says Briatore

Flavio Briatore insists Fernando Alonso will not be worried if Kimi Raikkonen is signed by Ferrari for 2014. As the long and sillier-than-usual driver 'silly-season' finally looks set to draw to a close, Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo said at Monza he is now poised to decide the famous Italian team's next lineup. "We will take a decision in the next days, and we haven't taken any kind of a decision yet," he said on Saturday. Undoubtedly, the frontrunners to be Spaniard Alonso's teammate next […]

Vettel says Mercedes has best F1 duo

Mercedes has perhaps the very best driver pairing in Formula One. That is not the claim of a figure like Ross Brawn, Toto Wolff or Niki Lauda, but of the German team's arch championship rival Sebastian Vettel. The reigning world champion, and runaway 2013 points leader, was asked by Bild to consider this year's field and name the ideal driver duo. "Hamilton and Rosberg," he told the German newspaper. "They push as well as harmonise one another very well," added the Red Bull driver. Vettel's […]

Renault factor involved in Raikkonen talks admits Lopez

Gerard Lopez has admitted Renault is involved in Lotus' push to keep Kimi Raikkonen at the team in 2014. It has been rumoured the Finn is pushing hard for a closer collaboration between Enstone based Lotus and Renault, who are reportedly looking for more exposure given world champion team Red Bull's ever-closer ties to Infiniti. Team owner Lopez on Sunday said Lotus has made "progress" regarding the talks with Raikkonen. "We understand what Kimi is waiting for," Lopez said. Asked if he is talking about […]

Marko tips Mercedes to bet everything on Hamilton for title

Red Bull's Dr Helmut Marko has tipped Mercedes to bet everything on Lewis Hamilton taking a shot at the 2013 world championship. On the face of it, the German squad does not have a number 1 driver, but with less than half the season left to go, and arguably now the fastest car, the last-start winner is Lewis Hamilton. The Briton's deficit to title leader Sebastian Vettel, however, is 48 points. Marko told Auto Bild: "We are taking Mercedes very seriously. "Last year we were […]

Alonso-Red Bull rumour a false alarm

A meeting in Hungary between Christian Horner and Fernando Alonso's manager could have had nothing to do with the Ferrari driver. Germany's Sport Bild reported earlier that Red Bull had confirmed the meeting in the team's motor home took place at Alonso manager Luis Garcia Abad's behest. Photos of the meeting were even published, raising the tantalising prospect of Alonso buying out the rest of his long and lucrative Ferrari deal to join arch-rival Sebastian Vettel at Red Bull in 2014. But Auto Motor und […]

Ecclestone insists 2014 calendar to have 20 races

Bernie Ecclestone has played down suggestions the F1 calendar could blow out to an unprecedented 22 races in 2014. The reports, including in the Italian magazine Autosprint, followed this week's surprise news that Austria will stage a grand prix next year, after a ten-year absence. There are 19 races on the 2013 schedule, with Russia and New Jersey also scheduled to join next year. It is a situation that is of concern to Formula 1 team bosses, with talks set to take place at the […]

Ex-F1 boss Kolles tried to blackmail Wolff

Former HRT boss Colin Kolles tried to blackmail Mercedes chief Toto Wolff earlier this year, it has emerged. We reported earlier that a conversation between Austrian Wolff and a then-unnamed former F1 team boss was "secretly recorded" and then threatened to be used against him. Bild newspaper had said Wolff spoke negatively about his own boss, Ross Brawn, colleague Niki Lauda, and also Daimler chairman Dieter Zetsche, whilst divulging details of his clashing co-ownership of the Williams team. A subsequent report by the magazine Sport […]

Raikkonen unfazed by Lauda's 'wimp' jibe

Kimi Raikkonen declined to hit back at Niki Lauda on Friday, despite the F1 legend calling him a "wimp". Told that triple world champion and Mercedes chairman Lauda has been talking about him, Raikkonen said at the Nurburgring: "Huh? To me? He (Lauda) hasn't spoken to me." The 2007 world champion was then told by the interviewer for Tagesspiegel newspaper that Lauda had said ignoring Red Bull's offer of a 2014 seat would make him a "wimp". "I don't care what he says," said the […]
