Kobayashi critical of money over talent

Kamui Kobayashi has criticised the tendency for some Formula 1 teams to prefer money to talent as he targets a return to the sport in 2014. Kobayashi raced in the sport between 2009 and 2012, finishing on the podium in Japan last season. This year Kobayashi is racing for Ferrari in the World Endurance Championship. Kobayashi also tested a Ferrari F10 at Fiorano in May. "It’s been an unusual year for me,” Kobayashi said. “I chose to tackle a new adventure with Ferrari, racing a […]

'Not a cent' in Sauber's pockets yet

The extent of Sauber's Russian rescue deal, and the emergence of future team driver Sergey Sirotkin, caught the world of Formula One by surprise. Russian F1 commentator Alexei Popov is quoted by Basler Zeitung newspaper: "I had to read the (press release) several times before I could believe it." Some of the sport's sceptics are still not sure. There are reports of links to the KGB, but in truth very little is known about the entities listed in the Sauber release. The likely debut of […]

Unpaid Ferrari could switch off Sauber engines

Embattled Sauber could have its engine power switched off permanently on the day after the forthcoming Hungarian grand prix. Germany's Die Welt newspaper reports that the Swiss team is now EUR 15 million behind in its due payments to customer engine supplier Ferrari. The report said Ferrari has issued Sauber an ultimatum: pay at least EUR 8 million of the overdue bill by 29 July - the first day of the 'summer break' - or have the supply of 2.4 litre V8 engines switched off. FR3.5: Vandoorne dominates in Moscow

McLaren young driver Stoffel Vandoorne dominated proceedings as he stormed to two victories in Formula Renault 3.5's visit to Moscow. Vandoorne secured pole position for the opening race and controlled the 33 lap affair, finishing comfortably clear of Red Bull junior driver Antonio Felix da Costa, who was suffering from an exhaust problem. Championship leader Kevin Magnussen could manage only eleventh and thus saw his advantage over Vandoorne slashed to just four points. The race was marred by a heavy accident for Lucas Foresti, who […]

Raikkonen and Pic amongst the Stars in Moscow

This weekend Kimi Raikkonen and Charles Pic were the headline acts in a very special event co-organised by Renault: the ‘Race of Stars’, a unique activity staged in Moscow, Russia. Gutierrez: Lotus to fight Red Bull for title

After spending some time from an elevated trackside vantage point in Barcelona last week, Esteban Gutierrez has tipped Red Bull and Lotus to fight for the 2013 title. "I was out on track and had a look at a couple of the corners," the rookie Sauber racer is quoted by Germany's Auto Motor und Sport. "I was surprised by how different the cars are. Moscow enjoys F1 spotlight on spare weekend

'Moscow' was the word on F1 fanatics' lips at the weekend. On the last days off before the arduous Hockenheim-Hungary double header, Russia was the centre of the sport's attention. Although the coastal resort city Sochi will host the first Russian grand prix in 2014, modern F1 cars and current drivers including Lewis Hamilton demonstrated their wares on a temporary street circuit around the Kremlin. "I think Moscow has an opportunity, I hope, in the future to put on a street race," Briton Hamilton is […]

Massa could lose seat during August break says Petrov

Vitaly Petrov thinks it is possible Felipe Massa will lose his Ferrari seat long before the 2012 season is over. But Caterham's Russian driver, who moved from Renault (now Lotus) at the end of last season, does not believe reports that Ferrari could sack the struggling Brazilian imminently, such as after next weekend's Monaco grand prix. "I don't think they'll fire Massa just now. At least not until August," Petrov is quoted by the state owned Moscow news agency Ria Novosti. There are six races […]

Russia has GP preparations 'on back burner'

Preparations for the inaugural Russian grand prix in 2014 appear to have hit a roadblock. We reported last weekend that rumours were circulating in the Barcelona paddock that the Sochi race now appears "doomed". The state owned Moscow news agency Ria Novosti now reports that political issues have created "serious delays" in the race's preparations, according to an adviser with the Russian Automobile Federation. The official, Igor Yermilin, insisted that the project is not doomed, but he said very few efforts have taken place following […]

Young driver test could be moved to Silverstone

For the last two season in Formula 1, there has been a young drivers test which has taken place towards the end of the season at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi. Currently, the event - giving inexperienced drivers the chance to drive current F1 cars amid the sport's strict testing limits - is scheduled to take place as per usual in Abu Dhabi late this season. But with India taking place just one week before the Abu Dhabi grand prix, the test scheduled […]
