Lewis Hamilton will start the United States Grand Prix on Sunday from pole position after recording the fastest time during qualifying. His fast lap of 1:33.108 was .239 of a second better than runner-up Sebastian Vettel of Scuderia Ferrari and it set a new all-time fastest lap at Circuit of the Americas. This is Hamilton’s 72nd career Formula One pole, his 11th of the season and third in a row. "The team have done an exceptional job all weekend to filter the data that we […]

Hamilton: 'I tried my best out there'

Lewis Hamilton finished the Hungarian Grand Prix fourth after facing radio communication issues for most of the race, causing him to remain stuck behind his team mate and losing time that would have helped him to attack the Ferrari drivers. After Valtteri Bottas eventually let him past to put pressure on Kimi Raikkonen, the Brit was unable to pass and gave Bottas the place back in the final corner.  The Mercedes driver remains second in the Drivers’ Championship, 14 points off Sebastian Vettel (202 points).  […]

Hamilton's victory, an open goal from Ferrari

This was one of the best races from a race strategy point of view for years. Like last year’s Spanish Grand Prix, strategy decided the outcome, but the two main protagonists, Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel also surpassed themselves, with heroic drives, making it a truly memorable race. Here we will analyse the momentous decisions that dictated the outcome, at how the pendulum swung from one driver to another several times. And we will also look at how the lowly Sauber team managed to score its […]

Was victory possible by pitting Vettel sooner?

The Russian Grand Prix was always likely to be one of those races where, with the new 2017 combination of high drag cars and low degradation tyres, overtaking would be extremely difficult and strategy games equally so. In fact it was only the fourth race in F1 history to feature no overtaking moves after the opening lap skirmishes. The key question is whether Ferrari could have manoeuvred Sebastian Vettel into a position to win the race, after losing the lead at the start to Bottas, […]

Bottas:

Valtteri Bottas claimed his first Formula 1 victory in a tense Russian Grand Prix that saw him jumping the two Ferraris off the start, then edging out Sebastian Vettel in a nail-bitting, race-long battle. The Finn reckons the result came as a confirmation of his talent and will give him lots of confidence for the future. His team mate, Lewis Hamilton produced a battling drive to finish P4 after struggling with overheating throughout the race. "It’s going to take a while to sink in. Normally […]

Bottas claims maiden F1 victory

Valtteri Bottas won the Russian Grand Prix to score his maiden Formula One victory by .617 of a second over Scuderia Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel. The result came after 81 races in Formula One, but only his fourth with Mercedes. The Finn took over Nico Rosberg's seat at Mercedes, after The German retired at the end of the 2016 season. Bottas' triumph also kept Mercedes’ record at Sochi Autodrom intact, as the manufacturer won all the Russian GP to date, in 2014 and 2015 with Lewis Hamilton and the 2016 race with […]

Mercedes continues to set peace in testing

Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport completed 143 laps of the Bahrain International Circuit on Wednesday, as the first in-season test of 2017 concluded in Bahrain. Valtteri Bottas was behind the wheel of the W08 EQ Power+ and ended the day top of the timesheets, clocking a 1:31.280 on the SuperSoft compound Pirelli tyre late in the afternoon. The programme was focused on tyre and aerodynamic analysis, engine development evaluation and setup work to address issues with poor rear grip in Sunday's race. Mercedes completed a total of 658 laps […]

Hamilton quickest in opening testing day

The first of two days of testing at the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir began on Tuesday, with all 10 teams competing in the 2017 Formula One Championship being present. Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton set the quickest time (1:31.358) with Sauber’s Marcus Ericsson recording the most laps (106). "Today was tricky with it being so hot and very gusty but we still managed to get through plenty of work", Hamilton concluded. Bottas:

Valtteri Bottas admits that an order to let your team mate pass during a racing competition is the worst thing a driver could hear. The Finn was told by Mercedes to let Lewis Hamilon pass with just ten laps left of the Bahrain Grand Prix, making him to give up the second place he was on at that stage. "Well, I think honestly as a racing driver it’s maybe the worst thing you want to hear. That’s how it is", Bottas admits. "For sure I did it because there […]

Hamilton takes blame for penalty

Lewis Hamilton apologised to his team for taking the penalty after holding up Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo while driving too slow on pit entry during the Safety Car period. This move might have cost Hamiton the Bahrain Grand Prix victory as well as the championship lead. The Brit's first loss came at the start of the race when he lost a position to Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel. Although Mercedes offset Hamilton's strategy as much as possible to give him the chance of closing down Vettel in the final laps, the five-second […]
