Alonso encouraged by McLaren midfield scrap

Fernando Alonso says McLaren cannot be "proud" with its result at the British Grand Prix but nonetheless noted the improvements made by the squad. Alonso was challenging for points when he went off in damp conditions at Abbey and brushed the barriers, losing valuable time and track position. Alonso was able to recover from the incident but came home a low-key 13th, behind team-mate Jenson Button. There’s not much to be proud about after finishing 12th and 13th today. "In the tricky conditions at the […]

Button realistic over McLaren result

Jenson Button says McLaren perfected its strategy at the Austrian Grand Prix but is realistic not to expect such results at every race this season. Button enjoyed his strongest performance since McLaren linked up with Honda at the beginning of 2015 as he started from third on the grid, before moving up to second when the lights went out. Button was ultimately overhauled by quicker rivals but was able to finish in sixth position, collecting eight championship points in the process. "I knew the race […]

Button revels in 'mega' qualifying result

McLaren-Honda driver Jenson Button says he and the team judged conditions to perfection as he secured a surprise third place on the grid for the Austrian Grand Prix. Button progressed through to Q3 for the first time since 2014 and was one of the last drivers to switch from Intermediates to Ultra Soft tyres. Button was therefore the last driver to complete a lap and he took advantage of drying conditions to set the fifth best time, which became third due to grid drops for […]

Alonso: Drivers can't afford Austria mistakes

McLaren driver Fernando Alonso says the short nature of the Red Bull Ring, which plays host to this weekend's Austrian Grand Prix, means drivers cannot afford to make mistakes. The Red Bull Ring is the fourth shortest circuit on the current Formula 1 calendar, at 4.3km, and is composed of only nine corners. Alonso, who was eliminated on the opening lap of last year's event, is wary of the need to avoid mistakes in order to secure a promising grid position. "It’s a much shorter […]

Alonso says McLaren retired as a precaution

Fernando Alonso says he retired from the European Grand Prix as a precaution, due to a worsening gearbox problem with his McLaren-Honda MP4-31. Alonso was battling with Jenson Button on the fringes of the top 10 when he slowed, pulling into the garage with nine laps remaining at the Baku City Circuit. "This was always going to be a difficult race for us – and that’s made even more difficult when you don’t see the chequered flag," he said. "We had a developing issue on […]
