Sainz to replace Alonso at McLaren

McLaren Racing confirms that Carlos Sainz will race for the team starting with the 2019 Formula One World Championship. The Spaniard has signed a multi-year deal, replacing Fernando Alonso who will retire from the sport at the end of the season. Petrobras returns to F1 alongside McLaren

Petrobras is back in Formula 1, after forming a technical partnership with McLaren on Monday 19 February. The agreement provides for a technology partnership to develop high-performance fuel and lubricants, and may be extended to other strategic areas, such as the sharing of technologies between the parties. Alonso leads first test day at Silverstone

Fernando Alonso recorded the quickest time for McLaren-Honda during the opening day of the second in-season test at Silverstone, before rain affected the afternoon running. Alonso worked his way down to a 1:31.290 on the Super Soft tyres in the morning, before a heavy shower over lunchtime left the circuit drenched prior to the afternoon session. Fernando Alonso says McLaren cannot be "proud" with its result at the British Grand Prix but nonetheless noted the improvements made by the squad. Alonso was challenging for points when he went off in damp conditions at Abbey and brushed the barriers, losing valuable time and track position. Jenson Button was left to rue a damaged rear wing endplate on his McLaren MP4-31, which led to him being eliminated from the first knockout segment during qualifying for the British Grand Prix.
