McLaren seeking a new engine partner

McLaren is reportedly seeking a new engine partner for its famous Formula One team. The Woking based team has been powered by Mercedes engines since 1995, but the German carmaker now has its own, entirely separate works team. Indeed, McLaren's current Mercedes relationship will soon end, leaving the Martin Whitmarsh-led team having to become a normal engine 'customer' like Force India. Honda, the Japanese carmaker who in the past enjoyed a successful F1 partnership with McLaren, has been mentioned as a possible alternative, particularly with […]

McLaren members deny Hamilton rift

Jenson Button has hit out at those suggesting McLaren is falling out with departing driver Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton is heading to Mercedes next year, and since the news broke, reports have revealed a Twitter dispute with Button and a Suzuka party-snub by his mechanics. And after Hamilton was reportedly late for a briefing in Korea, a Sky reporter quoted Button as saying his 2013 teammate "Sergio (Perez) wouldn't have been late". "I didn't say a word of that," Button told Reuters. "It's amazing how people […]

Hamilton admits Suzuka could be awkward after Mercedes news

Although the uncertainty about his future is now over, Lewis Hamilton admits it could be awkward when he walks into his garage at Suzuka this weekend. The Japanese grand prix will be the first race in the Briton's six-year career at which other McLaren team members know for sure that Hamilton is departing. The 2008 world champion has decided to switch to Mercedes for 2013, prompting Hamilton to admit: "It will be interesting walking into the garage (at Suzuka). "There are a couple of guys […]

New 'flexi wing' saga emerging in F1

A new controversy about flexible front wings is set to emerge, according to Germany's Auto Motor und Sport. The magazine said McLaren has developed a front wing which moves around the horizontal axis, with Red Bull following suit with a similar idea that appeared in Singapore recently. The report said the FIA, despite clamping down on past 'flexi wing' sagas by ramping up the scrutineering tests, will study the latest designs closely this weekend at Suzuka. Auto Motor und Sport reported that Ferrari complained to […]

Perez was Mercedes' 'plan B' after Hamilton

Sergio Perez was another candidate to oust Michael Schumacher at Mercedes, a German magazine claimed on Monday. Auto Motor und Sport said it means the great seven time world champion was therefore only the third choice to line up alongside Nico Rosberg in 2013, after Lewis Hamilton and Mexican Perez. Ultimately, Mercedes secured its number one choice Hamilton, leaving McLaren to sign Mexican Perez to succeed him -- and Schumacher out in the cold. Prior to signing Hamilton, "the Silver Arrows bosses had stretched out […]

Perez no longer a 'pay driver' says Whitmarsh

Sergio Perez is no longer a "pay driver", McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh insists. Mexican Perez, also backed by Ferrari, started his F1 career by bringing millions in Carlos Slim-linked Telmex dollars to Sauber. But he is now moving to McLaren, amid speculation Telmex might eventually replace the grandee British team's title sponsor Vodafone. The Telegraph, however, quotes Whitmarsh as insisting there are no "side deals" to McLaren's Perez contract. "I did have a conversation with Carlos Slim yesterday but we have made an offer […]

McLaren confirms Sergio Perez

Sergio Perez has been confirmed at McLaren on a multi-year deal. Sergio Perez: "I’m thrilled and delighted to have become a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver. The McLaren name is one of the greatest in the history of Formula 1. McLaren ups money offer in bid to keep Hamilton

McLaren has slightly upped its monetary offer in a late bid to secure Lewis Hamilton's services for 2013, according to multiple British newspapers. The Daily Mail said McLaren has increased its offer by EUR 2.5 million to 15 million, which is still less than his current retainer of about 19 million. In the Times, correspondent Kevin Eason wrote that some in the paddock now expect an announcement to be made "in the next few days". But Eason also quoted an observer as saying: "For a […]

Hamilton to stay at McLaren, Schumacher at Mercedes

According to the latest buzz in the Singapore paddock, the 'Lewis Hamilton saga' could be almost at the finish line. Previously, it was rumoured the McLaren driver was so close to agreeing a switch to Mercedes next year that Michael Schumacher had started looking around for a new team. Writing in Kleine Zeitung newspaper, correspondent Karin Sturm even revealed she had spotted Schumacher's manager Sabine Kehm talking in the paddock with Peter Sauber and Monisha Kaltenborn. Mercedes offering Schumacher 2013 contract

Amid all the hype about Lewis Hamilton's supposed move to Mercedes, the German squad appears to be preparing to extend Michael Schumacher's career. The major German daily Bild said 43-year-old Schumacher's negotiations about 2013 and beyond are now "in full swing". The report claims Mercedes is offering the seven time world champion a new contract for 2013, while Schumacher is apparently pushing for a unilateral option that would allow him to decide to keep racing in 2014 as well. The carmaker's motor racing president Norbert […]

McLaren 'Plan B' shaping up amid Hamilton saga

Martin Whitmarsh left Monza insisting McLaren has "no plan B" in the event Lewis Hamilton jumps ship for 2013. But that's not according to the latest media speculation, which is mentioning Force India's Paul di Resta and former McLaren driver Heikki Kovalainen as potential candidates to replace the 2008 world champion and Monza winner. Plan A, however, is undoubtedly re-signing Hamilton. "I can imagine we'll have some conversations before Singapore," team boss Whitmarsh said. But he also admitted it is not too late to slot […]

McLaren questions Ferrari's 'tow' tactics

McLaren has questioned Ferrari's slipstreaming tactics in qualifying at Monza. The red cars endeavoured to give each other aerodynamic 'tows' down their home circuit's long straights on Saturday, but it went awry when Fernando Alonso's car developed a problem in Q3. And Felipe Massa, who qualified a season-best third, said he got in his best lap once the towing was all over. "I was always caring about the tow, to find a good tow, but then on the last run when I did my best […]
