Hamilton tops Sepang running despite problems

Lewis Hamilton set the quickest time during practice for the Malaysian Grand Prix, despite a day hampered by several issues. The Briton missed the opening practice session after stopping out on track with an engine problem on his out lap. He then spent the first part of the second session in the garage and had to return to the pits when Mercedes lost the telemetry. He was nonetheless able to post a time of 1:39.790 on the Medium tyres to go almost four tenths of […]

Ricciardo handed 10 place grid drop for Bahrain

Daniel Ricciardo has been given a 10 place grid penalty for next weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix. Ricciardo was penalised with the grid drop alongside a stop and go penalty after Red Bull released him unsafely from his third stop at the Malaysian Grand Prix. The Australian retired from the race during the closing laps. "It was looking like a solid points finish, the start was really good and I made positions," he told BBC Sport. "I was starting to mix it up at the front […]

Hamilton quickest in first Malaysian practice

Mercedes' early season strength was again evident with Briton Lewis Hamilton going fastest in Friday's first practice for the Malaysian Grand Prix in a session where many cars struggled for grip. The 2008 world champion clocked a best time of one minute 40.691 seconds at the Sepang Circuit on a scorching hot Friday where track temperatures reached 44 Celsius (111 Fahrenheit) during the 90 minute session. However, Hamilton was one of many drivers who encountered the Malaysian gravel after locking his wheels and the Briton […]

Alonso admits 2013 not best season as driver

Fernando Alonso has acknowledged he did not perform as strongly in 2013 as he did the previous year. Recently, the Spanish sports daily AS conducted a survey among Alonso's driver rivals asking them to say whether they thought the Ferrari driver or the quadruple world champion Sebastian Vettel was the best driver of 2013. The Spaniard came out on top. "It's always good to know that you are recognised by your peers," Alonso responded, "but I think 2012 was the best in my career. "This […]

As part of our season review, here is the 2013 Formula 1 season from the mouths of those involved in the sport: the humorous, the memorable, the radio messages, and those, with hindsight, that some surely regret... “That competitiveness is going to keep growing and I guess we'll see more of it this year. But I'll try to contain it so I don't come across like a dickhead or something!” – Daniel Ricciardo reveals his intentions to improve in 2013. “This year's car is the […]

Hulkenberg not fussed about Force India team-mate

Nico Hulkenberg says he is not fussed about the identity of his team-mate next season. Hulkenberg will race for Force India in 2014, but the Silverstone based team has yet to announce who will line up alongside the German. Paul di Resta, who has raced for the team since 2011, is unlikely to be retained, while Adrian Sutil's position with Force India is also in doubt. Outgoing McLaren driver Sergio Perez is the favourite for the vacant seat, but Hulkenberg insists that it is not […]

Season review: Future star Bianchi makes his mark

Jules Bianchi didn't have a seat as February turned into March. By the end of the month, he had impressed the Formula 1 community and he continued to build on his promise throughout the rest of the year. Prior to the start of the 2013 Formula 1 season, Max Chilton was in the unusual position of having had three team-mates even before flying out to the first round in Australia. Marussia veteran Timo Glock agreed to depart in order for the team to improve their […]

Vettel: Relationship with Webber not lacking in respect

Sebastian Vettel says he has 'enormous respect' for outgoing Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber and reckons that the gap between them is closer than many people think. Vettel, who has won 11 races this season and secured his fourth world championship in India, has had on track battles with Webber, most notably in Turkey three years ago and in Malaysia earlier in 2013. "We always shared respect especially on the track when we were fighting each other," Vettel said at a press conference at Red […]

Sebastian Vettel's path to 2013 world title glory

Last season, Sebastian Vettel won his third world title in a nail-biting finale in changeable conditions at Interlagos. In 2013, he faced few dramas as he wrapped up the title with three of the 19 races remaining. Here’s how Vettel won his fourth world title. Multi 21, Seb Red Bull demonstrated the best outright pace in Australia and Malaysia, but with Ferrari and Lotus getting one car ahead of Vettel in Australia, the signs were that Vettel would have a fight on his hands for […]

Hulkenberg elated with third place in qualifying

Nico Hulkenberg says that qualifying in third place for the Italian Grand Prix is a nice surprise for everyone at Sauber. The team has scored just seven points all season - courtesy of Hulkenberg - with a best finish of eighth in Malaysia. "I am happy," said Hulkenberg. "This was a nice surprise for all of us. I didn’t expect that after a very difficult Friday. Yesterday we struggled a lot with the car and the guys have done a fantastic job turning it around […]

Only Raikkonen to drive longer Lotus at Monza

Kimi Raikkonen, not his teammate Romain Grosjean, will debut Lotus' new longer-wheelbase car this weekend at Monza. "Kimi will drive the long wheelbase on Friday, and if necessary we can go back to the shorter version," race engineer Mark Slade told the Finnish newspaper Turun Sanomat. "But we expect this (long) car to be better." Raikkonen, however, does not expect the change will be enough to win on Sunday. "Low downforce tracks are not good for us," said the Finn, "but let's see how the […]
