Sainz jr on track for Toro Rosso future

Carlos Sainz jr is on course for a future in Formula One. The 17-year-old Spaniard is the son of Carlos Sainz, the former two-time world rally champion. Sainz jr, however, has pursued a career in open wheelers, and - now that Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne have stepped up - he is the new cream of energy drink Red Bull's junior driver programme. And another direct link to the world of Formula One for Sainz jr is his new sponsorship deal with Cepsa, the Spanish […]

After his Toro Rosso ousting, Jaime Alguersuari could emerge with the Mercedes team in 2012. The Spanish sports daily AS reports that Ipic, Abu Dhabi's international petroleum investment company, is unhappy with Red Bull for ousting the young Spaniard from its driver programme. IPIC owns the Spanish oil company Cepsa, which last year became a major Toro Rosso sponsor. Alguersuari, according to the report, "had become the image of the company in its international expansion plans". Through its investment vehicle Aabar, Abu Dhabi is also […]

McLaren plays down link with Pollock's Pure

McLaren has played down reports its cars could be powered by engines produced by Craig Pollock's new venture Pure in 2014. Former BAR founder Pollock is targeting at least two customers for his new turbo V6 engine, and Italy's La Gazzetta dello Sport said there has been contact between Pure and McLaren. With Mercedes now running its own works team and no longer even a minor McLaren shareholder, the Woking based team faces the prospect of paying for its power beyond this season. Gazzetta said […]

According to some sections of the media, Lewis Hamilton has kicked off 2012 on the wrong foot. The former world champion had a tumultuous 2011 season both on and off the circuit but has vowed to return at full speed this year. But among his first public appearances in the new year is in what Britain's Daily Mail described on Tuesday as a "garish photoshoot" for the American magazine GQ. Photos show Sauber with UBS sponsor logos

Sauber came tantalisingly close to a major sponsorship deal with UBS, the Zurich based global financial services company. It emerged recently that, before deciding to sponsor the entire sport last year, UBS chief executive Oswald Grubel wanted instead to link the brand with an individual team. Blick claims that team was Hinwil based Sauber, and the newspaper has now published three 'secret' photographs to prove it. The newspaper said Grubel is friends with the similarly-aged team owner Peter Sauber, and that the sponsor tie-up came […]

Caterham link hints at Renault switch for HRT

Cosworth could be left with just a single Formula 1 customer next year, if the latest rumblings from the rumour mill turn out to be true. It was reported at the end of last month that HRT, the struggling Spanish team, is set to begin working with a Cologne company co-owned by Tony Fernandes and Mike Gascoyne. Fernandes and Gascoyne, best known for heading the Team Lotus/Caterham team, reportedly now also own "the design office of the former Toyota team", according to the BBC in […]

Sutil admits eye on second Williams seat

Adrian Sutil has a firm eye on Williams as Formula one's driver lineup for 2012 takes more shape. On Friday, one of the German's potential options for next year - the vacant Lotus seat alongside Kimi Raikkonen - was filled by new GP2 champion Romain Grosjean. Sutil is expected to lose his Force India seat to Nico Hulkenberg, so the team veteran is now hoping for a switch to Williams. "Yes, certainly there has been talks with several teams for quite some time, but nothing […]

Ricciardo admits possibility of Caterham drive next year

Daniel Ricciardo has admitted Red Bull may have closed the door on his promotion to its secondary team Toro Rosso for 2012. Speculation throughout the year hinted that the Australian rookie, who mid-season stepped up with Red Bull backing to make his debut with the Spanish team HRT, would replace one of Toro Rosso's current drivers for 2012. However, with Toro Rosso drivers Sebastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari posting improved performances in 2011, as well as Red Bull-backed driver Jean-Éric Vergne vying for a seat, […]

Honda denies F1 return rumours

Honda has now added its denial to rumours the Japanese carmaker could be looking to return to F1 by supplying a V6 engine to McLaren in 2014. With McLaren's Mercedes relationship reverting to mere 'customer' status after next season, Auto Motor und Sport reported recently that Honda could fill the void by returning to F1 and rekindling its ultra-successful past link with the famous British team. "That's all wide of the mark," McLaren managing director Jonathan Neale said last week. And Honda chief executive Takanobu […]

Rosberg admits early McLaren link

Nico Rosberg has admitted he had talks about switching to McLaren while he was under contract to Williams some years ago. "It's true, there was a first discussion, but there was never the possibility of changing because I had a contract already," the German told Kolner Express newspaper. "So it wasn't a topic for me at all," added Rosberg, who now drives for Mercedes. "I am glad that I was with Williams and now Mercedes is my challenge." Highly competitive alongside seven time world champion […]

Williams: driver lineup to be decided within a week

The Williams’ driver lineup for 2012 is a hot topic at the moment. Venezuelan driver Pastor Maldonado is assumed to have secured a seat because of the substantial PDVSA sponsorship he brings to the team. However, there is much speculation about who will drive the other car. There have been reports linking many drivers to the second seat, such as 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen, Rubens Barrichello, Adrian Sutil as well as young driver Valtteri Bottas. Nevertheless, the decision on the matter is near, according […]
