Magnussen to race with spare chassis

Kevin Magnussen will race with Renault's spare chassis at the Canadian Grand Prix after he crashed out of the final practice session on Saturday. Magnussen lost control of his RS.16 through Turn 7 and hit the wall on the exit of the corner, sustaining substantial damage to the left-hand side of the car in the process. Magnussen was unable to participate in qualifying and is set to start Sunday's race from the pit lane. "Obviously I wanted to be driving rather than watching qualifying," he […]

Magnussen: Kvyat 'just lost his mind'

Renault's Kevin Magnussen has heaped criticism on Toro Rosso's Daniil Kvyat after the pair collided during the Monaco Grand Prix. Kvyat was running a lap down when he collided with Magnussen at Rascasse, sending the Renault driver into a spin. Magnussen suffered a secondary off when he later hit the wall at Mirabeau Haute and ultimately retired from the race. "We were in a good position as a lot of people were still to pit and we gained a lot of places," he said. "Unfortunately, […]

Palmer hopes for rain to salvage weekend

Jolyon Palmer says the potential arrival of wet weather could salvage a dismal weekend for Renault in Monaco, as he was knocked out in Q1 for the fifth successive weekend. Palmer, who spun at high-speed during the final practice session, was able to set only the 18th quickest time during qualifying. The Briton, yet to score points in Formula 1, hopes the anticipated stormy weather arrives during Sunday's Grand Prix. "It was a tough session but ultimately the position is around where we’re accustomed to […]

Renault drivers hindered by Monaco incidents

Both Kevin Magnussen and Jolyon Palmer suffered a disrupted day of running during practice for the Monaco Grand Prix after encountering separate incidents. Palmer brushed the barriers exiting Tabac during the morning session and was unable to complete his scheduled running, with repair work also impacting on his afternoon run plan. Magnussen, meanwhile, ran wide at Anthony Noghes and hit the wall, ending his afternoon prematurely. Magnussen placed 17th overall, three positions ahead of team-mate Palmer, who was edged out by both Sauber drivers. "It […]

Ricciardo, Magnussen to receive Renault gains

Daniel Ricciardo and Kevin Magnussen will receive Renault's upgraded power unit at this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix. Ricciardo and Magnussen both trialled the power unit during last week's in-season test at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya and were encouraged by the progress made by Renault. Renault originally intended to bring the upgrade to Canada but that has now been brought forwards, with two power units available across the four Renault-powered cars in Monaco. Max Verstappen and Jolyon Palmer will have to wait until the Canadian Grand […]

Magnussen encouraged by Renault engine gains

Kevin Magnussen has hailed the step forwards Renault has made with its B-spec power unit after he trialled the upgrades for the first time during in-season testing in Spain. Test driver Esteban Ocon sampled the update, along with Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo, on Tuesday at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Magnussen returned to the cockpit of the RS16 on Wednesday morning in Spain and was immediately impressed by the new power unit. "To be honest the engine feels nice to drive, driveability is better than with […]

Magnussen drops position after Palmer contact penalty

Kevin Magnussen was handed a 10 second time penalty and two points on his license following last lap contact with Renault team-mate Jolyon Palmer in Spain. Stewards deemed that Magnussen was culpable for edging Palmer wide at Turn 13 and went on to classify in 14th place. The sanction dropped Magnussen to 15th spot, behind Sauber's Felipe Nasr. "We had decent pace on the Soft tyre but on the Hard and the Medium – especially the Medium – we were weak," he said. "It wasn’t […]

Magnussen sure Renault 'not fooled' by points

Kevin Magnussen insists Renault is not being fooled by its seventh place finish in Russia and insists the manufacturer still has to make substantial progress. Magnussen scored his and Renault's first points of the year at Sochi but is sure seventh position does not truly reflect the team's standing in the pecking order. Magnussen also highlighted one lap pace as a weakness for Renault, with both RS16s failing to make it out of Q1 across the last three events. "It’s made everyone happy to finally […]

Ocon gets test day alongside FP1 run

Renault youngster Esteban Ocon will receive a day's worth of running in the RS.16 after the outfit confirmed that he will take part in the post-race test days in Spain. Under 2016 regulations, Formula 1 teams are permitted to hold two days of running after two Grands Prix, and these test days will take place in Spain and Britain. Ocon will drive the RS.16 on one day, with regular driver Kevin Magnussen in action on the other day, with the exact run plan yet to […]

Palmer confident Renault has solved problem

Jolyon Palmer expressed confidence that Renault has repaired the problem which he feels has held him back across the previous couple of races. Palmer slumped to 22nd and last during the Chinese Grand Prix, while he lagged behind Sergey Sirotkin and Kevin Magnussen during Friday's practice sessions at the Sochi Autodrom. Palmer qualified in only 18th place for the Russian Grand Prix but was able to get within a tenth of a second of team-mate Magnussen and was relieved by his progress. "Today the car […]

Renault confirms Magnussen suspension failure

Renault has confirmed that a suspension failure on the RS16 was the cause of Kevin Magnussen's truncated day at the Chinese Grand Prix. Magnussen completed only six laps during the morning session when the component failed along the back straight, though the Dane was able to safely return the pit lane. Renault has modified the component but the issue meant Magnussen missed the entirety of the second session. "I had a suspension failure on the car, and that led to the tyre going," he said. […]

Magnussen sure of points in 'normal' race

Kevin Magnussen is sure that he can end his and Renault's points drought in a 'normal' race weekend after his opening two events were hindered by a puncture and a penalty. Magnussen was able to finish only 12th in Australia due to a first lap puncture, while in Bahrain he was forced to start from the pit lane after failing to stop at the weighbridge during practice. Magnsusen recovered to 11th position in the race at Sakhir and is confident of breaking into the top […]
