Over 2000 people were killed when the earthquake, which measured 7.8 on the Richter scale, hit the region on Saturday and the death toll is expected to rise over the coming days. Todt tips Ferrari to end crisis quickly

Jean Todt insists Ferrari is not in the sort of crisis today that he found at Maranello more than two decades ago. The Frenchman, now FIA president, said any comparison between when he was drafted in by Luca di Montezemolo to rebuild the team in 1993 and Ferrari's current situation "makes me smile". "I think Ferrari, today, does not need an awful lot to put things back in order," Todt, who presided over Ferrari throughout its ultra-successful Michael Schumacher era until last decade, told the […]

Todt: Cost cutting ideas a joke

FIA president Jean Todt says that the cost cutting proposals put forwards by the Formula 1 teams are a 'joke'. Todt summoned a meeting of Formula 1's 11 teams earlier in the month following the apparent abandonment of the idea of a cost cap. Ideas proposed included a tyre warmer ban and the introduction of more standard specification parts, but Todt does not believe that such changes will be sufficient. "My advice was make a contribution as to how we reduce the costs," Todt said. […]

FIA open to double points rethink

FIA president Jean Todt has hinted that there could be a rethink on the current Formula 1 regulation which awards double points to the last round of the season. The rule, which was voted on unanimously by the Formula 1 Strategy Group, was introduced for the 2014 season but has been met with backlash from senior figures within the sport and the majority of fans. The six teams in Formula 1's Strategy Group failed to unite and oppose the rule change for 2014 after the […]

FIA to abandon cost cap plans - Todt

The FIA has abandoned plans to introduce a cost cap into Formula 1 for the 2015 season, according to president Jean Todt. It was announced at the end of 2013 that plans would be drawn up by the end of June this year in order to implement a cost cap into the sport by January 2015. But Todt revealed ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix that such plans have now been abandoned. "Most of the teams were in favour of the cost cap, but I […]

Todt backs move for permanent race numbers in F1

The newly re-elected Jean Todt says he supports moves to reinstate permanent race numbers in Formula One. In an earlier era, F1 fans became accustomed to associating a number with their favourite driver -- like Gilles Villeneuve's fabled 27, or the 'red 5' of Nigel Mansell. But in more recent years, race numbers have simply been assigned by the FIA on the basis of teams' finishing positions in the constructors' world championship. It emerged recently, however, that a push is on to bring back permanent […]

Ward withdraws from FIA elections, Todt unopposed

David Ward has withdrawn his candidacy for next month's FIA elections, leaving current president Jean Todt unopposed to secure a second term in the position. Ward, who released his manifesto in September, did not receive sufficient support from member clubs. "I am writing to confirm my withdrawal as a candidate in the 2013 FIA Presidential election," Ward said in a statement. "It has not proved possible for me to secure the required number of regional Vice Presidents for Sport to ensure the eligibility of my […]

Rally made Raikkonen better F1 driver says Solberg

Kimi Raikkonen's rallying foray made him a better Formula One driver. That is the claim of 2003 world rally champion Petter Solberg, who got to know the 'iceman' during his two-year F1 sabbatical in 2010 and 2011. Finn Raikkonen returned to F1 with Lotus last season, impressing the grand prix world yet again after his career had flat-lined in his final two years at Ferrari. "I know Kimi and I believe that the rally made him a better Formula One driver," Solberg told the Norwegian […]
