Vergne takes grid drop for engine change

Jean-Eric Vergne will drop 10 places on the grid for the Japanese Grand Prix after Toro Rosso elected to change the internal combustion engine in his STR9 for a sixth time. Vergne had qualified in 11th place but as a result of his sanction he will now line-up on the back row of the grid for Sunday's race at Suzuka. "Unfortunately, Jean-Eric will have a slightly more difficult afternoon, as he takes a ten place grid penalty because today's engine change meant fitting his sixth […]

130r could be more of a challenge - Vergne

Jean-Eric Vergne believes that Suzuka's infamous 130r corner could be more of a challenge this year due to the reduced downforce levels of the 2014 cars. Vergne finished sixth in Singapore but will miss the first practice session at Suzuka as Toro Rosso opts to hand Max Verstappen an outing in the STR9. Vergne believes that drivers may have to be wary of the fast left-hander towards the end of the lap. "Suzuka is one of the best tracks on the calendar," he said. "I […]

Despite starting from 12th and copping two time penalties, Vergne recovered to finish in sixth place after a sequence of overtaking moves during the closing stages of the race. Vergne consequently matched his result from last year's Canadian Grand Prix as he bids to remain on the Formula 1 grid in 2015. "It feels great," he said. "It was a fantastic race and I'm […]

Tost: More to come from Vergne

Toro Rosso team principal Franz Tost insists that there is still more to come from Jean-Eric Vergne, who is contesting his third season with the squad. Vergne made his debut in 2012 but missed out on a Red Bull seat for 2014 and remained with Toro Rosso, alongside rookie team-mate Daniil Kvyat. Vergne has scored nine points across the opening 10 races of the year but has frequently been halted by issues with the Frenchman having retired from half of the races. "He has suffered […]

Vergne finds 'aggressiveness' again

Jean-Eric Vergne says that his performance during the British Grand Prix was a boost to his self-confidence after finishing in 10th place. "A strong race for the whole team, to have two cars in the points is certainly a good result and we all needed a positive outcome," he said. "I'm happy with my race. Starting from the back of […]

'Mixed feelings' for Toro Rosso

Toro Rosso duo Jean-Eric Vergne and Daniil Kvyat admitted to mixed feelings despite both drivers progressing through to the top 10 shootout during qualifying for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Vergne and Kvyat had held positions inside the top six following the first runs in Q3 but the team misread the conditions, resulting in the pair slipping to the bottom of the times as the track improved. "We were fighting for really high positions today, but then towards the end we made the decision […]

Toro Rosso optimistic despite car issues

Toro Rosso duo Jean-Eric Vergne and Daniil Kvyat say they are optimistic over the squad's chances at this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix, despite both encountering issues during Friday practice. Vergne suffered a battery issue in the first session while a fuel leak damaged the power unit in Kvyat's STR9 during the second session. "Despite the little issue that we had this morning, which cut my session short, we managed to still achieve a good test programme today," said Vergne, who ended the day in 10th. […]

Vergne aiming for repeat performance

Jean-Eric Vergne says he is aiming for a repeat of last year's Canadian Grand Prix result as the Frenchman attempts to end a run of misfortune. Vergne has not finished in the top 10 since the opening round of the year after being beset by collisions and technical issues. Vergne collected a career-best sixth place at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in 2013 and the Toro Rosso racer is aiming for a repeat. "I had a very good Grand Prix there last year and I will […]

Vergne sure Toro Rosso has Q3 package

Jean-Eric Vergne says he is confident that Toro Rosso can fight for the top 10 in qualifying on Saturday. Vergne was fourth quickest during a rain-affected second practice session and believes that the pace of the STR9 is sufficient for the team to be able to progress through to the final shootout. Vergne: Monaco needs 'humble' treatment

Jean-Eric Vergne says he is not approaching this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix with an overconfident demeanour, despite a couple of strong showings at the circuit. Vergne ran in the top 10 in 2012 until a late tyre gamble failed to pay off, while last year he raced to a fine eighth place. But the French driver does not believe that he can rely on his previous performances. "I have raced there twice in Formula One and both times I performed well," he said. "I think […]
