Brazil GP planning retirement send-off for Schumacher

Organisers of the Brazilian grand prix are planning to send Michael Schumacher back into retirement in style. In late 2006, the seven time world champion entered his first retirement with a pre-race celebration on the Interlagos grid involving soccer legend Pele. Now, with the 43-year-old's ultimate trip into retirement also coinciding with a Brazilian season finale, race organisers are planning a similar send-off. But for now, the details are top secret. "Just beforehand we will talk with Bernie Ecclestone, so as we do not interfere […]

Alonso furious at Ferrari in India

Fernando Alonso almost lost his temper ahead of last Sunday's Indian grand prix, the Italian newspaper La Stampa reports. The newspaper said the Spaniard was furious after the Maranello based team's technical boss Pat Fry blamed the drivers for a sub-standard qualifying performance. "The result reflects our current potential," said Fry after Alonso qualified fifth in India. "But in order to be where we wanted and where we were capable of being, we needed to be perfect today and we weren't," he added. Alonso went […]

F1 world set to tackle 'awkward' Indian GP

The just one-year-old Indian grand prix is already regarded as one of the most "awkward" stops on the annual calendar for Formula One teams and the sport's travelling circus. With a now four-race flyaway battle for the 2012 title set to kick off in the country this weekend, teams are nervous about the customs situation. They are worried that parts flown in at the last minute "may get stuck" at the airport, the Asian Age reports. There is also a visa situation, after several regular […]

Austin still working to finish 2012 US GP venue

Organisers of the first US grand prix since 2007 say the brand new Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, is now almost ready to host a Formula One race. The Hermann Tilke-designed track is scheduled to host the 2012 US GP in exactly a month from now. When the sport's impending journey to Texas was first announced, there was much scepticism about whether the event would ever take place, especially when founder Tavo Hellmund became embroiled in a legal row with the current organisers. […]

Ecclestone agrees lower fee for 2016 Korea GP extension

Bernie Ecclestone agreed to reduce the race fee as he extended Korea's grand prix contract through 2016, the AFP news agency reports. F1's annual trip since 2010 to Mokpo is among the most controversial and least popular on the calendar, but promoter Park Won-Hwa said on Friday a new contract has been signed. "We had to renegotiate with Mr Ecclestone and brought a few ideas and persuaded him that Korea cannot continue the event with such a big financial loss," he said. "It took a […]

Korea among least-popular races on F1 calendar

Korea, among F1's new breed of grands prix, is far from the most popular stop on the sport's annual calendar. Well-known British F1 photographer Darren Heath tweeted from the metropolis Seoul: "Fantastic 3 days. Early train to Mokpo tomorrow. "(It's) like being in London then heading to Shetland for an F1 GP. Mad," he concluded. According to the German news agency DPA, Formula One drivers "like the track" in South Korea but are "bugged by the strange atmosphere". Michael Schumacher confirmed: "We don't get too […]

Ecclestone eyes Turkey GP circuit tender

Bernie Ecclestone is interested in securing the former Turkish grand prix venue in Istanbul, the Hurriyet daily reports. The newspaper said a tender is scheduled to take place next Wednesday. The Istanbul Park circuit hosted Formula One races between 2005 and 2011, and although poorly attended the Hermann Tilke-penned layout was lauded particularly for its challenging quadruple-apex turn 8. But Turkey fell off the F1 calendar for 2012, after local organisers and F1 chief executive Ecclestone failed to agree a new higher race sanctioning fee. […]

The Bulls are Back in Town: Singapore GP review

It was a marathon Grand Prix, but at the end of fifty-nine laps of the Marina Bay Street Circuit, it was reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel who was the first driver to meet the chequered flag. In a season of twists and turns, it now appears to be a case of which of Vettel or Fernando Alonso will be the one to claim a third title as twenty-nine points separates the duo, with the circus heading to a series of circuits on which Vettel excels. Ross Brawn has revealed he is not planning to retire for at least a few more years. And amid rumours Lewis Hamilton could switch to the Brackley based camp for 2013, Brawn has told the Daily Mail he is not going anywhere for now. "I am not planning to retire […]
