Lopez: Lotus was a real option for Alonso

Lotus really was one of Fernando Alonso's options for the 2015 season, team owner Gerard Lopez has admitted. As the long saga preceding the Spanish driver's switch from Ferrari to McLaren played out, many teams in pitlane were linked with the double world champion. With Mercedes' dominant works team all locked up, at the top of the list were the Mercedes-powered customers Williams and Lotus. "It was a real option," Lopez confirmed to Spain's El Mundo newspaper. "We opened the door to Fernando, but it […]

Lotus admits E22 design error

Lotus team principal Gerard Lopez has conceded that his squad made a design mistake with the E22, with the Enstone-based outfit enduring a woeful 2014 campaign. Lotus has been a frontrunner in recent seasons but this year Romain Grosjean has scored just eight points, with Pastor Maldonado yet to finish in the top 10. The E22 is the only car on the grid to feature a twin-tusk approach and Lopez concedes that Lotus made an error in their design this year. "We’ve made one design […]

Lopez: Maldonado is 'unbelievably fast'

Lotus chairman Gerard Lopez has asserted that new recruit Pastor Maldonado is 'unbelievably fast'. Maldonado joined Lotus from Williams at the start of 2014 but has so far failed to reach Q3 or score a championship point. But Lopez insists that the Venezuelan's pace is not a problem. "We don’t have a number-one driver," he told The Official F1 Website. "We never had one, even when Kimi [Raikkonen] was with us. Whoever is in front is in front! Romain [Grosjean] has matured a lot. He […]

Lopez 'surprised' by Raikkonen struggle

Kimi Raikkonen's last team boss says he is "surprised" the Finn is struggling so much at the wheel of his new F1 car. The 2007 world champion, who had returned to the sport with the Enstone team after a rallying sabbatical, switched to Ferrari for 2014 following a Lotus pay dispute. But while Raikkonen was highly competitive at the wheel of his black and gold car, the 34-year-old has struggled notably for pace now that he is back in red. Asked if Raikkonen's 2014 struggle […]

Lotus: We must be performing by Barcelona

Lotus team principal Gerard Lopez has emphasised that they must be in a competitive position by the time Formula 1 returns to Europe for the Spanish Grand Prix in May. Lopez admits that Lotus got caught on the back foot but remains confident with regards to the potential of the E22. "We got caught on the back-foot," he told The National. "The first race was like a half-length testing session for us. The car is nowhere near where it should be and yet, even then, […]

Lotus: We have a super car

Acting team boss Gerard Lopez expects Lotus to be fully competitive in 2014. Amid rumours of financial strife, the Enstone team sat out the opening Jerez test, and when the E22 finally made its public debut in Bahrain on Wednesday, it clocked the slowest time and a mere 8 laps. Team owner Lopez, however - acting as team boss while the McLaren-departed Eric Boullier's successor is found - said Lotus was right to have voluntarily skipped Jerez. "I predicted there would not be much to […]

Lotus interested in Whitmarsh

Deposed McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh could switch to Lotus for 2014, an insider has confirmed. Lotus' former chief, Eric Boullier, is the hot favourite to replace Whitmarsh at Woking, even though McLaren is not ready to confirm it. "New car but no boss", read the headline at the weekend by the Spanish newspaper Diario Sport. A team spokesman was quoted by Germany's Die Welt: "We are not talking at the moment about our management leadership." On the other hand, Lotus' team owner Gerard Lopez has […]

Boullier leaves Lotus, Lopez becomes team principal

Eric Boullier has left his position as Lotus team principal with immediate effect. The Frenchman joined Lotus ahead of the 2010 season but has departed the team. Co-chairman Gerard Lopez will take over the role of team principal. Lopez's other chairmanship responsibilities will now be shared with co-Chairman Andrew Ruhan. "Lotus F1 Team has never stood still and we head into what promises to be an exciting 2014 season with an innovative new car, new partners and a new management structure at Enstone," said Lopez. […]

Lopez plays down Lotus collapse fears

Lotus owner Gerard Lopez has moved to allay fears the Enstone based team is on the verge of collapse. When the FIA issued the official 2014 entry list recently, Lotus' place was marked with a conspicuous asterisk, fuelling rumours of financial doom. "We just had the wrong team name on the list, namely the one of two years ago," Lopez told Germany's Auto Motor und Sport on Wednesday. "I can assure you -- everything is still the same." Despite the reassurance, however, many wonder if […]
