Alonso would have won title for Lotus says Villeneuve

1997 world champion Jacques Villeneuve thinks Fernando Alonso would have won this year's title at the wheel of the 2013 Lotus car. The French Canadian told the Spanish sports daily AS that the Ferrari driver's performance this season was not quite as impressive as in 2012. "He (Alonso) is always at a high level," Villeneuve said at Interlagos, "but what we saw from Alonso in 2012 I have not seen this year. That was second to none -- the best I've seen. "This year, with […]

Ferrari 'insane' to sign Raikkonen says Villeneuve

Jacques Villeneuve has blasted Ferrari's decision to sign Kimi Raikkonen for 2014. Prior to his slump in form and Ferrari's decision to push him into sabbatical at the end of 2009, the Finn won the Italian team's last world title in 2007. But 1997 world champion Villeneuve thinks bringing the now 33-year-old Raikkonen back to Ferrari in Felipe Massa's wake is not smart. "Ferrari are completely insane," the always outspoken French Canadian told the German newspaper Bild. "He can drive a car fast, but he […]

Vettel snubbed Webber's Monza farewell party

Sebastian Vettel on Friday did not attend a farewell party to mark teammate Mark Webber's last grand prix in Europe. Germany's Bild newspaper said the reigning world champion sat downstairs 'playing with his iphone' while, just 16 steps above in the Red Bull motor home at Monza, much of the F1 fraternity paid tribute to Webber as the Australian's 12-year career draws to a close. Helping Webber celebrate were figures like Ross Brawn, Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton and even Sir Frank Williams, who was carried […]

Grosjean 'did not learn' from 2012 mistakes says Villeneuve

Romain Grosjean, denounced by Mark Webber last year as the 'first lap nutcase', insists he has changed for the better ahead of the 2013 season. But 1997 world champion Jacques Villeneuve doesn't think so. "The only reason he has the chance of winning is because he has an incredible car," French Canadian Villeneuve, who has been signed up by F1's new French broadcaster Canal+ for 2013, said. "His only problem is that he does not learn from his mistakes," the former Williams and Sauber driver […]

World champions admire 2012 favourite Alonso

A swathe of world champions have backed Fernando Alonso to collect his third drivers' title in 2012. Writing in Italy's La Gazzetta dello Sport, veteran correspondent Pino Allievi referred to the Spaniard, runaway championship leader and Hockenheim winner as "a perfect driver". He said the Ferrari driver has also "sparked the imagination" of his fellow champions, including legends Niki Lauda, Alain Prost, Sir Jackie Stewart, Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve. "He reminds me of myself, and a little bit of Prost," Austrian Lauda is quoted […]

Webber admits other teams 'interested' for 2013

Mark Webber has admitted his return to form in 2012 has triggered the interest of rival F1 teams. The Australian struggled alongside reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel last year, but two weeks ago in Monaco he returned to the top step of the podium. Webber, 35, is now equal on points with his younger teammate, and just three points from Fernando Alonso's title lead. "It was a long season last year," he told French Canadian newspaper La Presse in Montreal. "But this year is very […]
