Bianchi staying at Marussia in 2014

Jules Bianchi is staying at Marussia in 2014, the team announced on Thursday. The Ferrari-backed Frenchman had been tipped for a move up the grid next year, perhaps to Ferrari-powered Sauber. But Marussia team boss John Booth said in a media statement that keeping Bianchi, 24, on board for 2014 is a "great pleasure". "He rose to the challenge of his debut season exceptionally well and since that time has clearly demonstrated his ability and potential," said Booth. Currently powered by departing supplier Cosworth, Marussia […]

Korean GP organisers would consider night race

The promoter of the Korean Grand Prix says that he would consider holding the race at night as he bids to strike a better deal with Bernie Ecclestone. Korea joined the Formula 1 calendar in 2010 but has been beset by financial problems and poorly attended races. The 2014 event is set to switch to a date early in the season, with the race scheduled to take place on April 27th. But the FIA has listed the event provisional on the draft 2014 calendar and […]

Pirelli to be 'very conservative' for 2014 says Hembery

The days where grands prix are spiced-up by deliberately heavily-degrading tyres could be over. Since the tyre-exploding crisis earlier this season, and the mid-year shift from steel to kevlar-belted tyres, Pirelli has also been taking more conservative compound choices to the races. Very recently, it has culminated in less exiting grands prix, and runaway championship leader Sebastian Vettel's now tight grip on the second half of the season. And for 2014, despite the radical engine rules shift, little will change on the tyre front. "We […]

Vettel boos linked to lack of 'charisma' says Stuck

Hans-Joachim Stuck, a German motor racing legend, has backed Sebastian Vettel after the reigning world champion was booed on recent F1 podiums. He told Munich's Abendzeitung newspaper that the dominant Red Bull driver doesn't deserve the scorn simply for winning, or that he's not "cool" or "cute" like Kimi Raikkonen and Nico Rosberg respectively. "All I can say is, dear Sebastian, don't worry about," said Stuck. Stuck said he was sometimes booed as a driver, although the situation is not comparable to Vettel's because the […]

Ecclestone 'working' to help Massa stay in F1

Bernie Ecclestone has admitted he is working hard to ensure the last Brazilian driver does not drop out of F1. Currently, Felipe Massa is the only Brazilian on the grid, but he has lost his Ferrari seat. Manager Nicolas Todt is working hard to tap into the Brazilian sponsor market to ensure Massa is in contention for the rides at Lotus, Williams, Force India and Sauber. It is rumoured the Brazilian broadcaster Globo could also play a vital role. Brazil and South America are important […]

Massa has edge on Hulkenberg for Lotus seat

Lotus is weighing up between Nico Hulkenberg and Felipe Massa to complete its 2014 driver lineup. Asked recently if - in the interests of continuity - Romain Grosjean will definitely be retained next year if Kimi Raikkonen departs, team boss Eric Boullier answered simply: "Yes." So that leaves only the cockpit currently occupied by the Ferrari-bound Finn Raikkonen to fill. The candidates are Hulkenberg - the impressive German who after moving from Force India last year is now seeking to jump from struggling Sauber - […]

Whitmarsh: 21 races will be tough in 2014

McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh believes that next year's Formula 1 calendar will be tough for teams. The 2014 season is set to feature 21 races, with Austria and Mexico returning to the sport and Russia joining the circus. For a second successive season, the proposed race in New Jersey was not included on the provisional calendar. "I think 21 is tough," said Whitmarsh. "I’ve got no personal knowledge of New Jersey so I can’t comment on that. Will those 21 all happen? There’s lots […]

Lopez tips Raikkonen to agree new deal 'quickly'

Team owner Gerard Lopez is hopeful Kimi Raikkonen will soon sign a new deal to stay at Lotus in 2014. As a weekend of fever-pitch speculation nears an end, the Finnish driver's manager Steve Robertson has now clearly denied rumours Raikkonen has inked a Ferrari contract. "It's a load of rubbish," he told the broadcaster MTV3. "We are in the same place as we were a month ago in Hungary -- we do not have an agreement," Robertson insisted. MTV3 claims Raikkonen staying at Lotus […]

Ecclestone confirms Michelin eyeing F1 return

Bernie Ecclestone has confirmed reports from Spa-Francorchamps this week that Michelin wants to return to Formula One. "They do want to get back in," the F1 chief executive is quoted by Auto Motor und Sport, "but we have had contracts with Pirelli for some time." Ecclestone is referring to commercial arrangements that have already been made with the sport's existing supplier. But there is no such contract between Pirelli and F1's governing FIA beyond 2013. That has ramped up the pressure on the already-frustrated Italian […]

Pirelli confirms 2014 tyre size not changing

Pirelli has confirmed reports the size of its F1 tyres will not be changing. Earlier, it was suggested that because the torque produced by next year's new V6 engines will be much greater, the Italian marque wanted to supply bigger and wider tyres. Indeed, motor sport boss Paul Hembery told Germany's Auto Motor und Sport that the 2014 data supplied by one engine supplier in particular - believed to be Mercedes - was "alarming". This ties in with reports Mercedes' 2014 rivals, Renault and Ferrari, […]

Indian Grand Prix to take sabbatical, will return in 2015

Bernie Ecclestone has confirmed that there will not be an Indian Grand Prix in 2014. Instead, the event will return to the sport at the start of 2015. Due to the move, there will also be a race in the country in 2012. Ecclestone told IANS that an agreement has been reached with race promoter Jaypee group. "When we signed the five-year deal with Jaypee we were keen on going to India in the first half and Jaypee wanted it to be in October," he […]

Indian Grand Prix future in doubt

The Indian Grand Prix is unlikely to be included on next year's Formula 1 calendar, according to Bernie Ecclestone. The Buddh International Circuit joined the sport in 2011 but tax issues have plagued the event, with teams unhappy at not being granted an exemption due to the government not viewing Formula 1 as a sport. Organisers of the Russian Grand Prix also revealed last week that they have been given a provisional 2014 date of late October, traditionally used by the Indian Grand Prix. "Is […]
