Former Formula 1 driver Derek Warwick will act as the FIA driver steward for this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix. Warwick raced in 146 Formula 1 events between 1981 and 1993, as well as winning the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1992. Warwick has regularly been a driver steward since the initiative was introduced in 2010. The DRS zones for this weekend's event remain unchanged from last year. The detection point of the first zone is 10 metres before Turn Nine and the activation point is […]
The FIA has confirmed that there will be two DRS zones for this weekend's Australian Grand Prix. As in 2013, there will be one detection zone on the entry of turn 14. DRS will then be permitted for use along the pit straight and between turns two and three. The rules for DRS remain unchanged from last season, meaning that drivers are free to use DRS in the applicable zones during practice and qualifying. In the race, drivers must be within a second of a […]
Reflecting on the young drivers progressing through the ranks, with a brief look at GP2, GP3, Formula Renault 3.5, Formula 3 and Formula Renault 2.0. GP2 Series: Swiss roll This season’s GP2 championship was far from a classic as neither title contender emerged as a serious candidate for a Formula 1 seat. Racing Engineering driver Fabio Leimer clinched the title during the penultimate race in Abu Dhabi; the Swiss driver won three feature races and bounced back to become the consistent benchmark after a middling […]
Both Jules Bianchi and Max Chilton expressed their frustration after technical problems affected their running ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Bianchi qualified in 20th place but will drop to the back of the grid after sustaining a penalty for a gearbox change. The replacement was necessary after the Frenchman spun off track in final practice. "It has not been a good day on my side, so to work hard together to come back from that is a big plus and I am happy […]
Nico Hulkenberg described his effort during qualifying for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix as a 'perfect lap'. Hulkenberg will start the race from sixth place on the grid in his Sauber C32. "It was a perfect lap and I could really get the maximum out of the car," he said. "Overtaking won’t be easy on this track. There are the two DRS zones, and in the past there have been a few overtaking manoeuvres, but I think we have a good top-speed. We were able […]
Formula 1 heads straight to Japan after last weekend's Korean Grand Prix, for round 15 of the Championship. Suzuka is a favourite circuit for many drivers because of its classic layout and its fast and technical characteristics. There are no room for mistakes at Suzuka as the circuit features a combination of corners which flow together, denying the drivers any rest. The circuit is equally challenging for the teams, who need to find a compromise for a good overall car balance. Suzuka has a high-downforce […]
Lotus team principal Eric Boullier says that Romain Grosjean was "begging" for team orders during the closing laps of the Korean Grand Prix. Grosjean made a mistake exiting the final corner and was passed by team-mate Kimi Raikkonen. Grosjean's attempts at re-passing Raikkonen were thwarted by the appearance of the fire truck immediately after he was overtaken by the Finn. The Frenchman was heard on the radio asking to be allowed through, but Boullier informed his driver that he would have to race Raikkonen if […]
Lotus will no longer use the 'passive DRS' system that has often appeared on the black and gold E21 in 2013. "No, it probably won't be seen again this season," said the team's trackside boss Alan Permane. "We have not given up on it, but it still doesn't work perfectly," he told Germany's Auto Motor und Sport. "And we simply don't want to spend any more time on it. "Our technical department is now working more or less exclusively on the car for next season," […]
Esteban Gutiérrez expressed his delight after qualifying in tenth place for the Singapore Grand Prix. Gutiérrez made it through to Q3 for the first time in his Formula 1 career and admitted that it was a special feeling. "To qualify tenth is a really special feeling and one that I have missed," he said. "I enjoyed every part of the qualifying. The result today was very important, because it’s not fun going into qualifying knowing that you can be around the top ten, but not […]
Bright lights, big city. Formula 1 heads to Singapore for some night fever; it's Round 13 of the 2013 Formula 1 world championship.
Beating Red Bull to the world championship will now be "virtually impossible" for rival teams, former Mercedes boss Norbert Haug admits. But the 60-year-old, who was replaced as the German marque's motor racing president by Toto Wolff for 2013 and beyond, tipped Mercedes to give the reigning world champions a run for their money next year. "I think Mercedes will be very well positioned," Haug told Servus TV. "It also took Red Bull five years to build the team. This is the fourth one for […]
Jenson Button says that McLaren didn't quite get his gear ratios right as he secured the final world championship point by finishing in tenth place in Italy. Button also had to contend with a pre-race drama when his MP4-28 developed a fuel system problem about an hour before the start of the race. "I had a bad start when my clutch slipped, and I dropped a few places. That first stint was quite good fun, but, once I got stuck behind Daniel [Ricciardo], there was […]
