Departing Valsecchi not paid by Lotus in 2013

As fears about Lotus' health grow, 2013 reserve driver Davide Valsecchi has revealed he has not yet been paid by the Enstone based team. As reigning GP2 champion, 26-year-old Italian Valsecchi served last year as Lotus' reserve driver, but he admitted last week he is now likely to exit. "After a 2013 season in which I travelled a lot but did not get on the track, I want to go back to wearing overalls and a helmet," he had said. When Lotus overlooked him late […]

Lotus to replace reserve driver Valsecchi

Lotus looks to have made its choice of official reserve driver for 2014. It appears unlikely the Enstone based team will keep Davide Valsecchi on board, particularly after the Italian admitted he was "angry" when bosses overlooked him as the surgery-bound Kimi Raikkonen's replacement late last season. "Perhaps I lack experience but what chance do you have to gain any?" he said at the time. According to the Italiaracing publication, Lotus looks set to turn to the similarly Eric Boullier-managed, 23-year-old Danish driver Marco Sorensen […]

Kovalainen responds to Briatore criticism

Heikki Kovalainen has responded to his former manager Flavio Briatore, after the Italian claimed Lotus should not have signed him. Drafted in to replace the injured Kimi Raikkonen for the last two races of 2013, fellow Finn Kovalainen initially impressed in Austin last weekend but finished the US grand prix a disappointing 15th. Briatore, Kovalainen's former manager and Renault team boss, reportedly observed that Lotus clearly got its choice wrong, and should have promoted reserve driver Davide Valsecchi instead. "The US grand prix showed that […]

Valsecchi angered by Lotus decision

Davide Valsecchi says he is angry at Lotus's decision to overlook him for the vacant seat for the final two round of 2013. Kimi Raikkonen withdrew from the races in America and Brazil to undergo back surgery, but Lotus opted to hire Heikki Kovalainen rather than reserve driver Valsecchi. Valsecchi, the 2012 GP2 champion, believes it's a 'tragedy' that he was not selected. "It’s a huge blow to me. From the sporting point of view it’s a tragedy," he said. "It makes me angry to […]

Lotus confirms Kovalainen for remainder of 2013 season

Lotus has confirmed that Heikki Kovalainen will replace Kimi Raikkonen for the rest of the 2013 season. Raikkonen will skip the final two rounds of the year after electing to undergo surgery on his injured back and compatriot Kovalainen will take over in America and Brazil. Kovalainen completed a seat fitting at the Lotus factory on Wednesday, before flying out to Austin. Kovalainen raced for Lotus under their previous guise, Renault, in his rookie season in 2007, finishing on the podium in the Japanese Grand […]

Lotus to announce Kovalainen as Raikkonen replacement

Lotus is poised to announce Heikki Kovalainen as the replacement for his surgery-bound countryman Kimi Raikkonen for the last two races of 2013. It emerged earlier that the Enstone based team, despite having last year's GP2 champion Davide Valsecchi as its reserve driver, had made an offer to Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg. Hulkenberg turned it down, but it was a clear sign that Italian Valsecchi was not in fact the obvious favourite for the role, as Lotus tries desperately to improve its position in the lucrative […]

Salo tells Lotus to replace Raikkonen with Kovalainen

Fellow Finn Mika Salo has nominated Heikki Kovalainen as the ideal replacement at Lotus for his surgery-bound countryman Kimi Raikkonen. The conventional wisdom is that Lotus will simply promote its reserve driver, 2012 GP2 champion Davide Valsecchi, into Raikkonen's seat for the remaining two grands prix of the season. Italian Valsecchi, however, is a rookie, but Enstone based Lotus is locked in a lucrative and - given its financial problems - crucial battle for points and prize money in the constructors' world championship's upper places. […]

Two candidates in frame for Raikkonen's seat

Two candidates have emerged as possible replacements for the surgery-bound Kimi Raikkonen at Lotus for the remaining two grands prix of the year. If the 'Quantum' investment arrives at the Enstone based team, German driver Nico Hulkenberg is Lotus' preferred choice to succeed Raikkonen permanently for 2014. But given Raikkonen's premature exit, does he have a chance to switch from Sauber a couple of races early? "Not likely," Hulkenberg's manager Werner Heinz told Bild newspaper. "No one has talked with us about that." In reality, […]

Raikkonen to miss rest of 2013 season due to back surgery

Kimi Raikkonen will not compete in the final two races of 2013 due to undergoing back surgery next week. Raikkonen had been a doubt to compete in America and Brazil due to financial issues with Lotus, but a deal was struck on the morning of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix for the Finn to race. However, Raikkonen has now elected to undergo back surgery that will force him to miss the final two events after 'severe pain' following last weekend's event at the Yas Marina […]

Webber warns Formula 1 over pay drivers

Mark Webber has warned Formula 1 that the sport risks losing talented youngsters if there is a continued reliance on taking those drivers with financial backing. A combination of factors - including the continuing economic problems - have resulted in teams requiring to sign 'pay drivers.' Webber will retire at the end of the season and he will be replaced at Red Bull by Daniel Ricciardo. Five drivers made their debut in 2013, but neither GP2 champion Davide Valsecchi nor Formula Renault 3.5 Series champion […]

Raikkonen eager to race despite back pain

Kimi Raikkonen says he will try and take part in the Singapore Grand Prix, after back pain affected his preparations for the race on Saturday. Raikkonen's running in final practice was restricted due to the discomfort, thought to relate to a trapped nerve. In qualifying, the Finn was eliminated in the second segment, setting a time fast enough for only thirteenth on the grid. "This morning was very bad," he said. "It was good that we drove in qualifying in the end but not the […]

Webber laments young drivers missing Formula 1 shot

Outgoing Red Bull driver Mark Webber says several talented young drivers are unable to reach Formula 1, calling the situation a 'sad state'. Webber, who will retire at the end of the season, pointed to the fate of Dutch driver Robin Frijns as an example. Frijns won the Formula Renault 3.5 Series as a rookie in 2012 and is currently Sauber's reserve driver, although his Formula 1 race prospects appear limited, a situation Webber blames on a lack of money. "When I was on the […]
