Alonso fearful of Ferrari regression

Fernando Alonso says that Ferrari needs to make changes in order to be competitive at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Alonso, who has not won a race since May, was eighth quickest in second practice at the Yas Marina circuit. "Compared to other Fridays, today we were a bit less competitive than usual and now we need to work out if that is down to the fact that the track characteristics do not suit our car, or if it’s a question of set-up," he said. Marussia thrilled by double Q2 appearance

Marussia was left celebrating on Saturday evening after both cars progressed through to Q2 for the first time. An inspired tyre choice in a drying Q1 meant that both Jules Bianchi and Max Chilton made it beyond the first knockout session for the first time. Dry conditions returned for Q2, meaning that Bianchi and Chilton regressed but will still start from fifteenth and sixteenth. "Today is a fantastic result for the Team, who were so happy to be back in Q2," said Bianchi. "This was […]

Alonso realigns targets after qualifying in sixth

Fernando Alonso has said that his main target in Monaco is now beating championship rivals Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen after qualifying in sixth. Alonso previously expressed his confidence of winning the race but realigned his ambitions after setting the sixth fastest time. "Unfortunately, today did not go as we had hoped, even if we tried our very best," he said. Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali has said that his team are currently not looking at a 'dream team' line up. There have been suggestions that Sebastian Vettel could join the team as early as 2014, but Domenicali dismissed such rumours. "Could Vettel and Alonso one day be part of a dream team? All eyes are further down the grid as the 2012 world championship reaches its zenith on race-day Sunday at the Interlagos showdown. "It was not a perfect lap," Dr Helmut Marko told German RTL television, "but we don't absolutely have to win this race, we need to look out for Alonso." Alonso: We are not going to surrender

Fernando Alonso has said that he will keep pushing as he bids to win a third world title. Alonso will line up from seventh on the grid, three places behind Sebastian Vettel. "I think I did a good qualifying and, given how the last few races have gone, my chances of making it to the podium are still intact. That will be my objective because I know that, at least under normal circumstances, we are not in with a chance of fighting for the win", […]

Overtaking in 2011

Overtaking - how much, not enough, or too much of the ‘wrong’ sort - has been a frequent topic throughout the 2011 season, since the advent of DRS (the Drag Reduction System) and Pirelli tyres. What is beyond all doubt is that the overall levels of overtaking have climbed to record levels - there have been nearly 1500 passes so far in 18 races. However, no standard definition of an overtaking manoeuvre exists. The figures used below are calculated for strategic purposes, which are reflected […]

Toro Rosso take the fight to Sauber

Toro Rosso pulled level on points with Sauber in the Constructors' Championship after Jaime Alguersuari finished eighth in the Indian Grand Prix. Sauber remain ahead in the table, courtesy of a better race record, thanks to Kamui Kobayashi’s fifth place in the Monaco Grand Prix but with two races left and Toro Rosso having a good recent run of form, the battle for seventh – and the financial rewards it entails – are making for very interesting viewing. Toro Rosso had qualified in ninth and […]

Ferrari to switch focus to 2012 in September

Although refusing to write off the 2011 title, Ferrari has announced that its full focus will switch to next year's car project in September. "We have already defined all the updates for the 150 Italia, at least up until mid October," revealed team boss Stefano Domenicali at the summer media event in the Italian Dolomites. Earlier, he had told the Daily Telegraph: "Our target at the moment is really to stop in September and move to the new project. The more time we can spend […]
