Radical McLaren set-up fails to pay dividends

Jenson Button says that McLaren will revert to a normal set-up after a radical approach failed during Friday practice. Button said ahead of practice that he would try a radical set-up on his McLaren MP4-28 but conceded following the second of Friday's 90 minute sessions that it had failed. Button was 10th fastest in practice two. "We tried a number of different set-ups this morning – but I think our baseline was in the wrong place, so they didn’t particularly work around this type of […]

Indian Grand PrixView

The championship has been over for a few months but this weekend, the party for Red Bull and Sebastian Vettel will begin. A fifth place finish is all Vettel needs to wrap up the title and that’s assuming nearest rival Fernando Alonso wins the race. If the Spaniard is second, Vettel will need just eighth place to secure the crown. If Alonso is third or lower, Vettel wins the title. The omens for the German are good: he has never been beaten in India, he […]

Official fears 2013 to be India's last GP

This weekend's Indian grand prix could be the last, concerned motor sport chief Vicky Chandhok has admitted. There have been conflicting explanations as to the reason India has dropped off the 2014 calendar, amid reports of scheduling difficulties, tax hurdles and financial problems. But the New Delhi round is provisionally scheduled to return in 2015. If it does not, Indian motor sports clubs president Chandhok fears India's F1 foray will be over. "If it doesn't come back in 2015, it may never come back at […]

What's it like to be the safety car driver?

When race direction deems that an event needs to be neutralised, the safety car is deployed onto the circuit. But being a Safety car driver involves more than leading the Formula 1 cars when incidents or weather conditions requires their presence. It’s a relentless coordination job in which catching up the leader, keeping the field together and allowing lapped cars to overtake are more than just commands. All must be done with accuracy at a speed which allows the racing tyres to remain at an […]

'Hollow' pole position for Webber

Mark Webber expressed his satisfaction at securing pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix but added that such an achievement was 'hollow'. Webber secured his first pole position since last year's Korean Grand Prix after setting two laps fast enough to take top slot. It was also the first time in 2013 that Webber beat team-mate Sebastian Vettel in qualifying. But Webber believes that his achievement was hollow as Vettel suffered from a KERS failure in Q3. "It’s a great track and we always enjoy […]

"Given where we started yesterday, I think we should be pretty happy with P12," he said. "Slowly but surely we’ve made the car more drivable and in qualifying it felt quite good. The overnight efforts of everyone at the track […]
