Van der Garde gets Hockenheim outing

Sauber reserve driver Giedo van der Garde will return to the cockpit of the C33 for the first practice session at this weekend's German Grand Prix. Van der Garde last drove the car at the post-race test at Silverstone, although his day ended prematurely when he lost control and suffered a sizeable impact with the barriers. "For me it will be the first time running in an F1 car in Hockenheim," he said. "As the track is fairly close to Holland, I hope to see […]

Sutil struggling with recalcitrant Sauber

Adrian Sutil expressed his frustration with the handling of the Sauber C33 after a difficult second practice session at the British Grand Prix. Sutil was 18th quickest, having had to sit out the first session in favour of Giedo van der Garde. "It was difficult to feel comfortable with the car during the afternoon session," he said. "The set-up was not ideal, and that’s why the car did not react in a way we hoped for. We changed something, but didn’t get the reaction we […]

Gutierrez critical of grid penalty

Esteban Gutierrez believes that the FIA needs to re-think its penalty decision for unsafe releases from the pit lane after he was hit with a 10 place grid drop for this weekend's British Grand Prix. Gutierrez was release prematurely from his first stop in Austria - without his wheel firmly attached - and was hit with the mandatory stop and go penalty, along with the 10 place grid penalty. "I think it’s too harsh as in our case the wheel didn’t come off the car," […]

'Snappy' C33 hindering Sauber - Gutierrez

Esteban Gutierrez says that the ill-handling nature of the Sauber C33 is hurting the team at this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix. Sauber has failed to score a point so far in 2014 and their fortunes barely improved during practice, with Gutierrez in 16th place, one position ahead of team-mate Adrian Sutil. "It’s been a tough day," said the Mexican. "We had some technical problems this morning, which is not ideal because we lost valuable track time. This afternoon we managed to solve the issues we […]

Contrite Gutierrez devastated by 'most painful mistake'

Esteban Gutierrez apologised to his Sauber team after the 'most painful mistake' in his career. Sauber has struggled in 2014 but Gutierrez was in eighth place when he clipped the inside barrier at La Rascasse, causing terminal damage to his C33. Gutierrez's shunt, combined with other results, left Marussia's Jules Bianchi in ninth place - a result which means Sauber is now behind Marussia in the championship. "Unfortunately, I could not finish the race," he said. "It was probably the most painful mistake in my […]

Sutil: C33 still needs improving

Adrian Sutil says that the driveability of the Sauber C33 still requires improvement ahead of this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix. Sutil was 13th quickest during the second free practice session but crashed out of the first session after losing control at Mirabeau. "At the end of FP2, we were able to run a few laps on supersoft tyres, which worked out well," he said. "The car’s balance is decent. In general, we still have issues which we need to solve. The driveability needs to be […]

Gutierrez: Sauber needs to show progress

Esteban Gutierrez says that Sauber must put its learning into action and pick up results, starting at this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix. Gutierrez has not scored a point so far this season but the Mexican insists that the team has made progress following last week's two day test in Barcelona. But Gutierrez knows that the Swiss team must reflect this knowledge on-track. "We know things, we made steps but we need to put it into results," he said. "The direction we’re trying to follow is […]

Sutil aiming to end Sauber points drought

Adrian Sutil says he heads to this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix with the aim of ending his and Sauber's points drought. Sauber has yet to score a point in 2014 with Sutil finishing the Spanish Grand Prix in a lowly 17th position. But the German has occasionally starred in Monaco - as he did in 2013 when he battled his way to fifth place when driving for Force India. "The Monaco Grand Prix is a very nice event every year," he said. "I really like […]

Gutierrez: We achieved maximum

Esteban Gutierrez admitted that he achieved the maximum result possible during qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix. The Mexican racer, driving a lighter Sauber C33, put his car in 14th place during Q2. "That was the maximum we could achieve today," he said. "Considering the difficulties I had yesterday, the team did an excellent job to put things right for today. We definitely still have issues which we have to solve, but being closer to the competition is motivating us. "Obviously, we are not completely […]

Sauber sure of improvements despite woes

Sauber say they are making progress with the lighter C33 despite their Friday practice sessions in Spain being disrupted by issues. Adrian Sutil had a few problems but reserve Giedo van der Garde came off worse when his car suffered a brake failure into the first corner. The Dutchman managed to keep the car out of the wall but had to take evasive action through the gravel trap. Sutil ended the day in 13th place and expressed satisfaction with the potential of the C33. "We […]

Sauber duo place hopes on upgrades

Sauber racers Esteban Gutierrez and Adrian Sutil say they expect the team to make a positive step forwards at this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix. Sauber has struggled so far in 2014 and neither driver has scored a point, but the Swiss team has taken a substantial upgrade package to Barcelona in the hope of fighting for the points. "We have an aggressive approach on getting the bits together," said Gutierrez. "Both the team and Ferrari have been working hard to get it up to where […]

Van der Garde gets Spain outings

Sauber test and reserve driver Giedo van der Garde will receive track time in the C33 in Spain. Van der Garde will replace regular driver Esteban Gutierrez during the first practice session next Friday at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The Dutch driver will also be given a day in the car at the post-race test at the circuit, while Gutierrez will take to the track on the second day of the two-day test. "It is nice to come back to Europe and especially to Barcelona," […]
