A tough race for Max Verstappen today as he initially got up to third place from the busy start to eventually retire on lap 46. The decisive moment came during the first Safety Car when Red Bull put its both drivers on the medium tyre to the end of the race. Fernando Alonso put on an unexpected show during qualifying on Saturday after driving a stoning lap in Q1 on slicks to be quickest of all by the hefty margin of 1.3 seconds. Renault Sport Formula One Team secured its best-ever qualifying finish at Silverstone since its full return to the sport 18 months ago. Nico Hülkenberg put the R.S.17 into sixth position in the rain-affected session for the British Grand Prix, his fifth Q3 entrance after China, Bahrain, Russia and Canada; and best qualifying since joining the team at the start of the year. Lewis Hamilton will start the British Grand Prix from pole position after setting the fastest time during qualifying on Saturday.  The session began in wet conditions, with light rain dampening the track enough that teams used the intermediate tire throughout Q1. Drivers tiptoed on the wet surface as traction was hard to come by. The rain abated in Q2, allowing the track to dry enough for a return to slicks.
