Daniil Kvyat says he now has a lot of confidence in a Formula 1 car after his second practice outing with Toro Rosso. Kvyat, 19, will race for Toro Rosso next season and took part in the first practice session in Brazil, a week after he drove the car in practice in Austin. In wet conditions, Kvyat completed 17 laps, setting the eighth fastest time. "It was a very positive experience today, running in the wet," he said. "I got a reasonable lap which was […]

Rosberg tops wet day of running in Brazil

Nico Rosberg topped second practice in Brazil after a day of wet weather at Interlagos. Rosberg's time of 1:27.306 was two tenths of a second faster than world champion Sebastian Vettel. Most times were set during the final moments of the session as drivers sought to preserve wet tyres, with further challenging conditions expected across the remainder of the weekend. The wet weather also meant that teams were unable to trial Pirelli's 2014 development tyres, which the Italian company had specifically taken to Brazil. Mark […]

Ferrari duo say 2014 car 'difficult to drive'

The next generation of F1 car could be very difficult to drive, Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa said on Thursday. Insiders say the transition between the V8 era and the beginning of the turbo-powered era next year is perhaps the biggest rule change in F1's entire history. Spaniard Alonso said he has tried an early version of Ferrari's 2014 car in the team's Maranello simulator. "When I tried it for the first time, it was really difficult to drive," he is quoted in Brazil […]

Kovalainen responds to Briatore criticism

Heikki Kovalainen has responded to his former manager Flavio Briatore, after the Italian claimed Lotus should not have signed him. Drafted in to replace the injured Kimi Raikkonen for the last two races of 2013, fellow Finn Kovalainen initially impressed in Austin last weekend but finished the US grand prix a disappointing 15th. Briatore, Kovalainen's former manager and Renault team boss, reportedly observed that Lotus clearly got its choice wrong, and should have promoted reserve driver Davide Valsecchi instead. "The US grand prix showed that […]

Massa anticipating emotional close to Ferrari career

Felipe Massa is expecting this weekend's Brazilian Grand Prix to be an emotional affair as he leaves Ferrari after a decade long association with the team. Massa joined Ferrari as their test driver in 2003 and after racing for Sauber for two years, he returned to Ferrari in 2006 and has been with the team as a race driver ever since. "It’s a fantastic place to race and to finish an incredible time with Ferrari," he said. "It's a very long time. It’s our eighth […]

Pic uncertain of F1 future with Caterham

Charles Pic has conceded that his Formula 1 future remains unclear, ahead of the final race of 2013 in Brazil this weekend. Pic joined Caterham for 2013 as part of a 'multi-year deal' but the Frenchman has yet to be confirmed for next season by the team. It is understood that Pic is in competition with team-mate Giedo van der Garde and Lotus substitute and Caterham reserve driver Heikki Kovalainen for the two vacant seats. "For next year, I think the logical thing for me […]

Hamilton and Rosberg disagree over Massa's Williams move

F1 drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg are split over whether Felipe Massa's move to Williams is a boost to the departing Ferrari driver's career. Hamilton, the 2008 world champion, likened Massa's move after a long stint with Ferrari to his own decision to leave McLaren and join Mercedes this year. "It's a great opportunity for Felipe," said the Briton, who was almost beaten to his title by Massa in a thrilling Interlagos finale five years ago. "He was at Ferrari for a very long […]

Kovalainen targets stronger race in Brazil

Heikki Kovalainen has targeted a strong race day in Brazil after finishing only 14th at the United States Grand Prix. Kovalainen, filling in for injured compatriot Kimi Raikkonen, qualified in the top 10 but lost front downforce during the race, forcing him to make an unscheduled pit stop. "The race didn’t go the way we wanted and I’m not sure if it was the car or if the driver was just a little rusty! We had a problem with the front wing losing downforce which […]

Force India: No room for complacency

Force India team principal Vijay Mallya has urged his squad not to get complacent despite a 24 point buffer to Sauber in the fight for sixth place in the championship. Mallya is hoping that wet weather this weekend in Brazil could aid his team in pulling off a strong result. Last season, Nico Hulkenberg led the Brazilian Grand Prix and finished the race in fifth place for the team. "It was important that we secured such strong results in India and Abu Dhabi," he said. […]

Drivers to trial 2014 tyres in Brazil practice

Formula 1 drivers will have the opportunity to test the latest specification prototype tyres during free practice in Brazil this week. Each car will be allocated two sets of tyres to be used in the first two practice sessions on Friday at the Interlagos circuit. The tyres will feature the 2014 construction and profile, with the 2014 medium compound. Pirelli is expected to adopt a more conservative approach due to the vast regulation changes, which include the introduction of 1.6 litre v6 engines. "Just like […]

Happy Hamilton determined to retain second

Lewis Hamilton expressed his happiness after finishing the United States Grand Prix and vowed to retain second place in the constructors' championship for Mercedes. Hamilton's fourth place means that Mercedes has a 15 point buffer over Ferrari with just a single race remaining in Brazil. "That felt good out there this afternoon and I'm really happy with fourth place," he said. "It was so nice to have a race where I could fight for position and make progress. The car felt much better today than […]

PDVSA says Maldonado 'working on' Lotus switch

According to the paddock grapevine in Austin, Nico Hulkenberg is no longer in the running for the 2014 race seat at Lotus. "The team is changing (from Williams) and what he is working on is going to Lotus," said the PDVSA president.
