Vettel profits from Q2 tyre gamble

Reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel reckons a tyre gamble in Q2 aided him during the final shootout session during a wet qualifying hour at Spa Francorchamps in Belgium. Vettel narrowly made it through in Q2 after opting to save a set of Intermediate tyres, which he consequently used in Q3 where he set the third fastest time, behind the dominant Mercedes pair of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton. "I think it would be nice to be further up but the gap was quite big, [the] […]

Rosberg delighted by 'special' pole position

Nico Rosberg hailed his Mercedes team as he notched up his fourth successive pole position in 2014 during qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix at a wet Spa Francorchamps. Rosberg eclipsed Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who he leads in the title race by 11 points, by 0.228s to claim his seventh pole of the campaign. "It’s awesome at this track, [it's] one of the most special ones of the year. "[It was] not as difficult out there as some conditions as it was nearly always […]

Glazed brakes hinder Hamilton in Q3

Lewis Hamilton says that he was hindered by 'glazed brakes' during the final qualifying session for the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa Francorchamps. Hamilton slid wide at La Source and also erred under braking at the Bus Stop chicane before setting the second quickest time, 0.228s behind Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg. Hamilton believes that he lost time due to the braking issue, which developed on the out-lap. "I had a glazed front left brake, so the car was pulling to the left, or the right, […]

Rosberg beats Hamilton as Mercedes dominates wet qualifying session at Spa

Nico Rosberg took pole position for the Belgian Grand Prix at a wet Spa Francorchamps as he edged out Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton during a session in which the pair dominated. Rosberg and Hamilton diced for the fastest time as they lapped almost two seconds faster than nearest rival Sebastian Vettel. A torrential downpour 45 minutes before the start of qualifying soaked the circuit, although it dried slightly for Intermediates to be used in Q1. Times naturally tumbled as the session progressed and during a […]

Bottas leads way in final practice

Valtteri Bottas set the fastest time during a frantic ending to the final practice session ahead of qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa Francorchaps. Bottas set a time of 1:49.465 to finish the session 0.268s clear of Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo. Nico Rosberg was third for Mercedes, ahead of Kimi Räikkönen and Lewis Hamilton, who set identical times. Overnight rain left the circuit damp, with drivers emerging onto the circuit either on Intermediates and Wets, with the majority completing just an installation lap. […]

Newey: Spa 'damage limitation' for Red Bull

Adrian Newey has conceded that this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix will be an exercise in damage limitation for reigning world champions Red Bull. The characteristics of Spa-Francorchamps were not expected to suit Red Bull's RB10 and their preparations for this weekend's race were compromised during Friday practice as neither Sebastian Vettel nor Daniel Ricciardo enjoyed a smooth day. Ricciardo was hindered by brake problems in the second practice session, but it was worse for Vettel as engine problems in the first session meant he had […]

Allison: Front end hurting Raikkonen

Ferrari technical director says that Kimi Raikkonen is being restricted by the front end issues plaguing the F14T. Raikkonen's best result of the year was sixth in Hungary and he is currently a lowly 12th in the championship. "I would say that we have had a car that is not especially easy to drive – that’s certainly true," he said. "Particularly in Kimi’s case he doesn’t much like the front end of the car and Kimi’s a driver who likes to have a very strong […]

Albers praises 'extraordinary' Lotterer

Caterham team principal Christijan Albers has praised the progress made by rookie Andre Lotterer during his first day in the car at Spa Francorchamps. Lotterer was drafted in by Caterham to replace Kamui Kobayashi for this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix, marking the first time the German has driven a Formula 1 car in over a decade, in order to aid the team with their large upgrade package. Le Mans victor Lotterer ended the day less than a tenth of a second behind team-mate Marcus Ericsson […]

Raikkonen hampered by Ferrari setbacks

Four-time Belgian Grand Prix winner Kimi Raikkonen is on the back foot after encountering technical issues during Friday practice for this weekend's race at Spa Francorchamps. Raikkonen was only 15th quickest during the second session in Belgium and he missed out on completing a race simulation due to a misfire on his Ferrari F14T. Raikkonen was also hindered earlier in the day by a minor brake issue. "[It was] a difficult day, complicated by a series of setbacks which cost us valuable track time," he […]

Massa sure Williams can fight for podium

Felipe Massa is convinced that Williams can fight for the podium in this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix at Spa Francorchamps. Austria pole sitter Massa has not finished on the podium since last year's Spanish Grand Prix, but the Brazilian was encouraged by his fourth position during second practice at the Belgian circuit. "It was a good Friday for us with no issues and we were able to continue learning about the car," said Massa. "We saw some tyre degradation so that will make tyre strategy […]

Vettel concedes engine penalties inevitable

Sebastian Vettel has admitted that he will face grid penalties during the second half of the season after suffering from another dismal day in his title defence. Vettel suffered from a burnt exhaust during the first session and he was forced to miss the second session at Spa Francorchamps as Red Bull evaluated the damage to his RB10. Drivers are only permitted to use five of each of the six parts to the Power Unit across the duration of the campaign, but Vettel's problems so […]

Hamilton wary of wet qualifying

Lewis Hamilton expressed positivity after topping Friday practice ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, as he expects wet weather to strike for Saturday's qualifying session. Cool but dry conditions greeted the teams on Friday, but forecasts suggest that rain is likely to interrupt qualifying on Saturday afternoon. "It's great to be back in the car and it was feeling good out there today," he said. "The morning wasn't as strong, but it definitely improved in the afternoon. As always, we still have work to do […]
