British Grand Prix: Button's Silverstone jinx

Whitmarsh expects three engine suppliers in 2014

Martin Whitmarsh has revealed he is not surprised to hear about 2014 engine supplier Pure's problems. The McLaren boss and current FOTA chairman said he expects there to be just three engine manufacturers - Mercedes, Renault and Ferrari - supplying turbo V6 engines in 2014. There had already been doubts in the paddock that HRT and Marussia's V8 supplier, the British independent Cosworth, may not be in a position to supply engines in 2014 as per the radical new regulations. And it emerged recently that […]

Unlucky Button aims to end Silverstone 'jinx'

In his 13th consecutive season and stranded on 13 race wins, Jenson Button is hoping to finally end his Silverstone "jinx" this weekend. The McLaren driver has been caught in a performance slump recently, but he refused to tell British reporters that outright victory at his home grand prix in 2012 is unlikely. Statistically, however, Silverstone success is unlikely for the 32-year-old, given that since debuting in 2000, not a single metre of his 56,000 kilometres during grands prix have been spent in the lead […]

Schumacher world's second richest sportsman

Michael Schumacher has been pipped at the post in the race to be the world's richest sportsman. According to the Sunday Times' annual listings, the seven time world champion's (US) $823 million in career earnings is beaten only by golf legend Tiger Woods. American Woods has earned $869 million in his own ultra-successful career, the newspaper found. And the Sunday Times said the pair have each earned hundreds of millions of dollars more than other high-earning sportsmen, including Michael Jordan ($516m), Roger Federer ($316m) and […]

Mercedes yet to agree new Concorde

Mercedes may have withheld its signature from the new 2013 Concorde Agreement because of a disagreement about bonus money. That is the claim of Germany's authoritative Auto Motor und Sport, hot on the heels of Bernie Ecclestone's news on Saturday that the "majority" of teams - including grandees Ferrari, Red Bull and McLaren - have now agreed terms. The German report said Mercedes has recently been pushing for additional money on the basis of the team's historical lineage. Auto Motor und Sport said teams are […]

McLaren plays down link with Pollock's Pure

McLaren has played down reports its cars could be powered by engines produced by Craig Pollock's new venture Pure in 2014. Former BAR founder Pollock is targeting at least two customers for his new turbo V6 engine, and Italy's La Gazzetta dello Sport said there has been contact between Pure and McLaren. With Mercedes now running its own works team and no longer even a minor McLaren shareholder, the Woking based team faces the prospect of paying for its power beyond this season. Gazzetta said […]

Pollock's Pure to fire up first V6 engine in July

Craig Pollock believes there will be only a single independent engine maker in Formula One in 2014. The BAR founder and Jacques Villeneuve's former manager is now in charge of Pure, a new company that intends to supply a turbo V6 engine to F1 teams when the rules change in two seasons' time. Currently, there are four engine suppliers on the grid: Ferrari, Mercedes, Renault and the British independent Cosworth. "I am convinced that there will be four engine manufacturers in formula one in 2014," […]

Button working to build McLaren around him

Jenson Button's push to prominence at McLaren has been a deliberate attempt to build the famous team around him. Many commentators viewed the 2009 world champion's arrival last year to be the highly rated Lewis Hamilton's new teammate as akin to walking into "the lion's den". But less than two seasons later, Button is poised to beat the beleaguered Hamilton in the drivers' standings and has signed a new multiple year contract. The 31-year-old has also driven for Williams, Renault and Honda/Brawn, but it is […]

Hunt for the records in the remaining races

(Written by mnmracer) With the championship pretty much wrapped up, although it was becoming pretty obvious for a while now, watching the remaining races will not be to see who becomes champion. The most interesting driver battle will be Jenson Button, Fernando Alonso, Mark Webber and Lewis Hamilton duking it out for second in the championship. While Sebastian Vettel isn't fighting anyone else anymore, he is fighting the record books however. Here is an overview of the Formula One records that can still be equaled […]

Ecclestone not happy with Gilles Simon

Bernie Ecclestone has admitted F1 engine makers are right to be concerned about Gilles Simon's appointment by the new 2014 supplier Pure. Pure, headed by former BAR founder Craig Pollock, announced last month that it has signed Frenchman Simon as technical director. Former Ferrari engine boss Simon's most recent post has been at the FIA, where he has overseen the early stages of the engine suppliers' new rules for the post-V8 period. Renault Sport F1's Rob White admitted the appointment is a "concern to all […]

The Frenchman is most famous for being Ferrari's former engine boss, but most recently he was the FIA's powertrain chief.

He has now left the latter role to become te...
