Kamui Kobayashi says he could 'see just what it meant' to the whole team when he progressed through to Q2 during qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix. Formula 1 returnee Kobayashi had minimal running prior to qualifying but set the 15th fastest time and will start one position higher after a penalty for Valtteri Bottas. "That’s a good way to come back, not only for me in my first qualifying session of the year, but also for the whole team after such a difficult day […]

Daniel Ricciardo could barely contain his excitement after setting the second fastest time during qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix. Ricciardo set the provisional pole position time during the closing moments of a wet session but he was narrowly edged out by Mercedes's Lewis Hamilton. Valtteri Bottas admitted disappointment after qualifying in tenth place for the Australian Grand Prix. Despite making it through to Q3 for only the third time in his career, the Finn reckoned there was more raw pace in the FW36. Bottas will start from 15th place on the grid due to a penalty for a gearbox change. "The changeable conditions were very tricky for everyone today and on the whole I am a bit disappointed with finishing P10 in Q3," he said. "We had the raw […]

Lotus vows to recover after disastrous session

Lotus trackside operations director Alan Permane insists that their showing during qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix is not representative of the pace of the E22. Romain Grosjean set the 21st fastest time while Pastor Maldonado was unable to set a time due to delays in getting out on track after a power unit issue. "Today was not a reflection of all the hard work going on at Enstone and on track to get ourselves where we want to be," said Permane. "Qualifying at the […]

Sutil set the 14th fastest time during a wet session but reckons the car still requires improvements. "We had a difficult weekend as did many others," he said. "The car is not where we want it to be yet, but I am quite satisfied we were able to run without any problems during qualifying and that we made it into Q2. The yellow flag at the […]

Braking issues hampering Vergne

Jean-Eric Vergne says that the brake-by-wire system is hampering Toro Rosso's progress at the Australian Grand Prix. Vergne and team-mate Daniil Kvyat completed more laps than any other driver pairing but Vergne was struggling with the new system and had several off-track excursions. The Frenchman set the 11th quickest time in second practice. "Sometimes you've got this massive recharging at the rear, which recharges too much, so you have locking at the rear," Vergne told Autosport. "Sometimes it doesn't want to recharge and the brake […]

Button: Long runs not as fun as hoped

Jenson Button says that long runs in the McLaren MP4-29 are not as much fun as he'd hoped, after practice for the Australian Grand Prix. Button was fifth quickest in second practice but warned that the race will provide a different challenge. "In all honesty, these cars work better around here than I'd imagined, but Sunday's race will be very different," he said. Lotus: Renault has made progress

Lotus technical director Nick Chester has insisted that engine suppliers Renault has made progress. Lotus endured a woeful practice day for the Australian Grand Prix as Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado completed just 14 laps between them across the two sessions. Both drivers missed an entire session, while Grosjean's E22 snapped sideways under braking for turn six and he hit the wall. "We experienced quite a few issues today," said Chester. "We were delayed getting Romain’s car out in the first session due to a […]

Vettel relieved after practice running

Sebastian Vettel admitted relief after setting the fourth fastest time during practice for the Australian Grand Prix. Vettel and Red Bull endured a troublesome pre-season campaign but the RB10 ran smoothly across both sessions in Australia. "In a way it’s a relief today, the fact that we were running, we didn’t have any problems, the balance was good and the performance looked alright," he said. "In the end Friday times are not worth a lot, but it’s better to be close to the top rather […]
