It doesn’t quite seem possible that it’s been almost four months since Formula 1 2013 disbanded for the final time. Yet the 2014 season is upon us as the paddock gears up for the first race of the year around the streets of Albert Park in Melbourne. It’s the first of 19 rounds that encompasses some of the classic circuits, including Monaco, Silverstone, Spa and Monza, as well as the return of Austria and the introduction of Russia. The 11 teams from 2013 remain, each […]

Ricciardo: If we get points, we won't be crying

Daniel Ricciardo believes a points finish this weekend in Australia would represent a good start for reigning world champions Red Bull. Ricciardo has moved across from Toro Rosso but his first pre-season campaign with Red Bull has been marred by problems with the RB10. The team has yet to complete a full race distance, leading Ricciardo to emphasise the importance of simply finishing the race. "Not to play it down, but if we could finish and start the season with some points then, considering the […]

Lotus: Start of 2014 will be tough

Lotus is preparing for a tough opening part to the 2014 season, according to technical director Nick Chester. Lotus's E22 has endured a difficult pre-season campaign as it completed the fewest laps out of Formula 1's 11 teams. "To be blunt, we are starting further back than we would like to be," said Chester. "I think that the first two races of this season will be very challenging for us, however it also depends on the solutions that Renault will be able to bring to […]

Cautious Grosjean aims for points

Lotus driver Romain Grosjean has conceded that his team is on the back foot but nonetheless believes points should be an attainable target in Australia this weekend. Lotus heads to the first round of 2014 having completed the fewest running of all 11 teams. But Grosjean insists that the opening round of the year will not simply be an extended test session for Lotus. "The aim is to finish the race and maybe score points," he said. "We’re not yet in the place we want […]

Two DRS zones for Australian GP

The FIA has confirmed that there will be two DRS zones for this weekend's Australian Grand Prix. As in 2013, there will be one detection zone on the entry of turn 14. DRS will then be permitted for use along the pit straight and between turns two and three. The rules for DRS remain unchanged from last season, meaning that drivers are free to use DRS in the applicable zones during practice and qualifying. In the race, drivers must be within a second of a […]

Pirelli anticipating two to three stops

Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery says he is expecting a two or three stop strategy to be the optimum approach to this weekend's Australian Grand Prix. Formula 1 returns this week to race around the streets of Albert Park with medium and soft tyres in use. Last season, Kimi Raikkonen won in Australia after adopting a two stop strategy, compared to a three stop strategy used by several rivals. "This is the most radical rules shake-up of the modern Formula 1 era, so we’ve had […]

Hulkenberg eyeing points in Melbourne

Nico Hulkenberg says that Force India should be in the hunt for points at next weekend's Australian Grand Prix. Hulkenberg has yet to complete a single racing lap in three attempts in Australia but reckons Force India is in a strong position to profit early on in the year. "The car has come a long way since Jerez," he said. "We made steps at each test and I think we made very good use of the time we had available. We signed off a lot […]
