'No reason' to write off title insists McLaren

Not long ago, McLaren's 2013 campaign was in tatters, as the famous British team refused to rule out scrapping its new car and putting the 2012 machine back into action. But after Malaysia, and the long three-week gap that preceded this weekend's Chinese grand prix, the rhetoric from the Woking based camp is now infinitely more positive. Jenson Button is refusing even to rule out a title challenge. "The championship is still on as far as I am concerned and I am aiming for that. […]

Pirelli: Changing tyres now would be wrong

Pirelli has ruled out making changes to its 2013 product, despite Red Bull and Mercedes complaining that this year's tyres are penalising the best cars. Mercedes' Toto Wolff, and Red Bull's Dr Helmut Marko, suggested in Malaysia that the sport's Italian supplier has agreed to bring modified tyres to Bahrain late next month. But we reported on Wednesday that Lotus and Ferrari - both much happier with Pirelli's current tyres - would 'veto' any changes on the grounds that they do not pose a safety […]

Vettel apologises to Webber after ignoring team orders

Sebastian Vettel has apologised to Mark Webber after failing to adhere to team orders during the Malaysian Grand Prix. Red Bull ordered Webber and Vettel to maintain their position but Vettel overtook Webber to secure his first win of 2013. "I messed up today. I would love to come up with a nice excuse as to why I did it, but I can’t," said Vettel. "I can understand Mark’s frustration and the team not being happy with what I did today; I owe an explanation […]

Pirelli expecting three stops in Malaysia

Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembrey says that a three stop strategy is likely to be the best approach in this weekend's Malaysia Grand Prix. Last year, a wet/dry race led to winner Fernando Alonso stopping three times. "We would describe Sepang as genuinely ‘extreme’: both in terms of weather and track surface. This means that it is one of the most demanding weekends for our tyres that we experience all year," said Hembrey. "For the first time we see our new Orange hard compound in […]

Ecclestone wants 22-race calendar in 2014

Bernie Ecclestone has revealed he wants to push out F1's already bustling calendar to 22 races in 2014. This year, with New Jersey's demise, the schedule has dropped from its original 20 grands prix to just nineteen. But Russia is joining the action next season, and F1 business journalist Christian Sylt wrote in a City A.M. report that talks are on with Mexico and Thailand. "Having races in the right place is what matters," F1 chief executive Ecclestone told Sylt. "The teams could probably deal […]

Sutil edges closer to F1 return

Adrian Sutil is set to return to Formula One with Force India this season. Sutil, who sat out 2012 in the wake of the Eric Lux assault affair, has beaten hot contender Jules Bianchi to become Paul di Resta's new teammate. Force India is yet to confirm Sutil, although a decision is understood to have been made. "Sutil was in the McLaren simulator yesterday. As of Thursday, he will be in action for the last pre-season test in Barcelona", German media reported. "On 17 March […]

Pic comfortable after first Caterham outing

Charles Pic says he feels comfortable in his new team after his first day of action with Caterham. The French racer joined Caterham after spending his rookie season with rivals Marussia. "It was very good to get back on track and for my first day with the team it’s been pretty good. We had a technical issue late in the morning session that stopped the car on track but the team did a good job to fix it and give me enough time in the […]

Mercedes W04 breaks cover in Jerez

Having shown darkly-lit 'sneak preview' images on its website that triggered a server meltdown, and scheduling a launch event for the afternoon, photographers at Jerez scrambled on Monday morning to take the first unofficial shots of Mercedes' new W04. At the same time, Lewis Hamilton was being filmed for promotional purposes trackside, as he captured Nico Rosberg's debut laps on a Blackberry mobile phone -- a gratuitous plug for the team's new on-car sponsor. His 2013 teammate, Rosberg, was lapping on the day before official […]

Horner: 'Fierce determination' to retain championships

Red Bull has a fierce determination to keep hold of both championships, according to team principal Christian Horner. The Milton Keynes based team has claimed the previous three world titles. "The 2012 season was tough and long, but our success was testimony to all the hard work and dedication in the factory," said Horner. "We’re fortunate that we’ve been able to maintain continuity within our group. This is the fifth year that this driver pairing has been together. We’ve got continuity throughout all of the […]

Q&A with Eric Bouiller

Conducted by Lotus F1 Team How are you looking forward to 2013 and what do you hope can be achieved? EB: I think it is fair to say that great things are possible.
