Domenicali urges perfection from Ferrari

Stefano Domenicali has reiterated his belief that Ferrari can fight for the title despite a difficult weekend in Bahrain. Fernando Alonso finished in eighth place following breakage of a mechanical component within his DRS while Felipe Massa was out of the points following two punctures. The result leaves Alonso 30 points behind reigning champion Sebastian Vettel. "It’s hard to recall a race where so many things went wrong," said Domenicali. "We must continue to develop the car and increase our understanding of the tyres, which […]

Gutierrez apologises for Sutil accident

Sauber's Esteban Gutierrez has apologised to Adrian Sutil after taking the German out of the Chinese Grand Prix. Gutierrez made a good start from eighteenth on the grid but an error on the fifth lap meant he locked up under braking and hit the back of Sutil's Force India. "Right before going into the long straight I had Sergio Perez fighting behind me, and I approached the corner too fast. I was braking at the same place where I usually brake, however, didn’t anticipate the […]

Webber low on fuel during Vettel attack

Almost two weeks after the fact, the 'Multi-21' affair keeps racing. Germany's Auto Motor und Sport now reports a new fact: just as Sebastian Vettel ignored the team order to hold station, Mark Webber had turned down his engine because he was saving fuel. "The truth in F1 usually only comes to light piecemeal," said correspondent Michael Schmidt. It was already known that the chasing Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg were having fuel-saving issues. But Red Bull claimed it issued the team order […]

Caterham drivers disappointed after back row lockout

Qualifying may have been postponed until Sunday morning but there was sufficient light and dryness to run Q1. That meant that six drivers are already out and two of them are the Caterham racers of Giedo van der Garde and Charles Pic. Both drivers went off the road during Q1 and required a front wing change. "Sometimes qualifying goes like it did today. We obviously didn’t finish where we wanted to but for much of the session we looked pretty good, especially halfway through the […]

Red Bull unleash ominous pace but challengers remain close

Two practice sessions of the new season have revealed some light in the pecking order, even if it is too early to conclude who’s going to be the champion. Red Bull Racing set some ominous times during second practice, doubly so when Vettel’s aborted first lap is taken into consideration. He was four tenths clear of the fastest non-Red Bull driver and there’s undoubtedly more lap time to be unlocked. Mark Webber, who perennially underachieves around the Albert Park street circuit, was comfortably second quickest. […]

Hamilton tops showery final day of testing

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time on the final day of the second pre-season test at the Circuit de Catalunya. Hamilton's time of 1:23.282s was set during a dry interlude on a day disrupted by intermittent showers. Former team-mate Jenson Button was second for McLaren, ahead of the Toro Rosso of Jean Eric Vergne. Jules Bianchi staked his claim for the remaining Force India seat by setting the fifth fastest time. The morning session featured several red flags when the weather was at […]

Hamilton recognises Mercedes progress

Lewis Hamilton says he is pleased with the progress Mercedes has made in the first test in Jerez. Hamilton bounced back from an accident on Wednesday to complete 145 laps on the final day of running. "Today we managed the kind of mileage that the car is capable of and I think we have a good platform to start working from," he said. "Now we need to understand the F1 W04 even more: personally, I am learning something with every lap I do and every […]

Kubica tests DTM car in Valencia

Robert Kubica has tested a Mercedes AMG C-coupe, the marque's DTM machine, at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit near Valencia. The Pole completed 114 laps of the Spanish track, which was initially wet after heavy rain in the morning. "I was able to get to grips with the DTM Mercedes AMG C-coupe and felt very comfortable in the car, even though after my long break it meant adjusting to the high downforce that a state-of-the art DTM race car produces," he said to Autosport. "I'm very pleased […]

Kubica still intent on F1 return

Robert Kubica insists he is not finished with Formula One, despite a two year absence from the sport. The Pole suffered major injuries in a rallying accident in February 2011. Speaking to F1 Racing magazine, Kubica believes he can one day return to an F1 cockpit. "I still believe I can come back," he said. "It's not just a dream. Right now I have limitations with driving single-seaters, but they are less than they look from the outside". Kubica will take part in a DTM test in […]
