Luca Baldisserri, head of the Ferrari driver academy, says he is pleased with the progress Jules Bianchi has shown in his debut season with Marussia. Bianchi, who raced in GP2 in 2010 and 2011, moved into the Formula Renault 3.5 Series in 2012 but was unable to win the championship, which went to Robin Frijns. Bianchi has also tested for Ferrari in several young driver tests and participated in nine Friday practice sessions for Force India last season. Bianchi was set to continue in that […]
Michael Schumacher has admitted he did not expect his former team Mercedes to make such a leap forwards in 2013. After his F1 comeback with Mercedes between 2010 and 2012, Schumacher returned to retirement this year and was replaced by Lewis Hamilton. In the great German's wake, Hamilton won from pole last time out in Hungary, while Schumacher's former teammate Nico Rosberg has won twice in 2013 so far. "Given where we finished last season," seven time world champion Schumacher told Eurosport, "it's a surprise […]
Formula 1 teams are set to be handed 10 place grid penalties if a car is allowed to leave a pit garage with a loose wheel. The rule will be applied during all Formula 1 sessions. If a team releases a car with an insecurely attached wheel during practice or qualifying, the 10 place grid drop will be applied to the driver for that weekend's race. Should the team err during the race, the grid drop will be carried over to the following event. The […]
Heikki Kovalainen has played down rumours he is shaping up to oust the underperforming rookie Giedo van der Garde at Caterham. The team, having earlier paid the highly rated Finn Kovalainen since formation in 2010, opted for a pair of sponsored drivers this year. But in the Silverstone and Nurburgring paddocks most recently, the rumour that Kovalainen could soon return to the wheel - in van der Garde's place - gained in strength. "I think this (sort of rumour) is quite common in Formula One, […]
Marussia have agreed a long-term technical partnership with Ferrari to use their engines and full powertrain from 2014, the Anglo-Russian Formula One team said on Tuesday. The move had been widely expected, with Marussia's existing supplier Cosworth set to leave the sport and the team appointing Frenchman Jules Bianchi - a Ferrari reserve - to their race line-up at the start of this year. Marussia said in a statement that the deal provided further confirmation of the team's commitment to Formula One and "determination to […]
Mark Webber will bow out of Formula 1 after 12 seasons; here's why the sport will miss him.
Nico Hulkenberg says he is eager to race at the Nurburgring for the first time in Formula 1. Hulkenberg made his Formula 1 debut in 2010 but during that season the German Grand Prix was held at Hockenheim. The last time the sport visited the Nurburgring was in 2011, when Hulkenberg was Force India's reserve driver. Hulkenberg heads to the race having scored a point in Britain, his sixth of the season and Sauber's first since the Chinese Grand Prix. "I know the Nürburgring very […]
Jean Eric Vergne says he is pleasantly surprised by the pace of the STR8 ahead of this weekend's British Grand Prix. Vergne was seventh fastest in second practice, one place behind team-mate Daniel Ricciardo. "This afternoon, as soon as I left the garage, I could tell the car felt very good. It was easy to push and my lap times were good," said Vergne. "That doesn’t mean we’re going to relax, far from it and we will be working hard tonight to look at all […]

Most Formula One teams have deals in place with Pirelli beyond 2013, according to a respected correspondent. Bernie Ecclestone told F1 business journalist Christian Sylt last week that the organisation he leads - commercial rights holder Formula One Management - has "a contract with Pirelli for next year". But the F1 chief executive added: "Pirelli haven't got an agreement with the FIA (for 2014)." Now, Telegraph correspondent Tom Cary is reporting not only Ecclestone's 2014 deal with Pirelli, but also that "long-term deals" between Pirelli […]
Red Bull driver Mark Webber says his future is in his hands, despite strong rumours linking rivals with his seat for 2014. Webber has driven for Red Bull since 2007 and indicated that he still has time to decide on his future career path. "The ball is pretty firmly in my court, which is nice," he told Australian TV. "I have to of course continue to keep driving well, otherwise then that ball will go out of your court and other people will roll into […]
