Sebastian Vettel says he will not be changing his approach to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, despite having wrapped up his fourth successive world title. Vettel has won 10 of this season's 16 races and insists that Red Bull will continue to push for victories in Abu Dhabi, America and Brazil. Vettel has claimed pole position twice at the Yas Marina circuit and won the race in 2009 and 2010, clinching his maiden title at the latter event. He retired on the first lap in […]
The titles may be wrapped up but there are still three Formula 1 races to win before the season is over. The first of those takes place at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull are the 2013 champions but the Formula 1 season is not yet over. Three teams are in the fight for second place in the constructors’ standings while there is still a mathematical possibility for any of the five drivers behind Vettel to be crowned vice-champion. […]
The news that Daniil Kvyat will race for Toro Rosso in 2014 came as a surprise, as many expected Antonio Felix da Costa to replace Red Bull bound Daniel Ricciardo, with Kvyat stepping up to Formula Renault 3.5. Instead, Kvyat will make the leap into Formula 1, racing alongside current driver Jean-Eric Vergne for the Faenza based team. So just who is Daniil Kvyat? Kvyat was born in Ufa, Russia, in April 1994 but he and his family moved to Italy early on in his […]
In 2007, Formula 1 left Indianapolis for the final time and a few weeks later, America’s only representative on the grid, Scott Speed, was given the boot from Toro Rosso. Five years passed before the sport rekindled its relationship with the USA and now not only is there a race at the purpose built Circuit of the Americas near Austin, but an American driver is knocking on the door of a Formula 1 seat. Alexander Rossi, who admits he had no interest in pursuing a […]
When race direction deems that an event needs to be neutralised, the safety car is deployed onto the circuit. But being a Safety car driver involves more than leading the Formula 1 cars when incidents or weather conditions requires their presence. It’s a relentless coordination job in which catching up the leader, keeping the field together and allowing lapped cars to overtake are more than just commands. All must be done with accuracy at a speed which allows the racing tyres to remain at an […]
As the Sebastian Vettel/Red Bull juggernaut marches on towards a fourth successive title, much of the attention now switches to 2014. The sport will enter a new era consisting of modified regulations, the most significant being the 1.6 litre V6 power units. Teams will be eager to stretch out the miniscule of advantages over their rivals as if you get it right early on, it will make 2014, 2015 and even 2016 far more simpler to manage. Red Bull got it right at the start […]
Replacing Michael Schumacher with Lewis Hamilton was the right thing for Mercedes. That is the claim not only of F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone, but also the German team's own Niki Lauda. A year ago, Lauda was instrumental in convincing Lewis Hamilton to leave McLaren and replace the seven time world champion, Schumacher. "It was the right decision to sign Lewis," Ecclestone told Germany's Auto Bild. "He woke the team up. And he can push the other driver (Nico Rosberg) in a way Michael couldn't […]
Sauber has confirmed that they will continue their partnership with Ferrari into Formula 1's new era in 2014. Ferrari will supply Sauber with a complete powertrain, including engine, gearbox and ERS (Energy Recovery System). "We are pleased to extend our technical partnership with Ferrari taking Sauber into the new era of engines that starts in 2014," said team principal Monisha Kaltenborn. "Ferrari has been a long standing partner of the team, first from 1997 to 2005 and then again from 2010 onwards." "We are proud […]
Formula 1 returns to Asia for the 2013 Korean Grand Prix, the first of two back-to-back races on the continent. The Korean International Circuit tests the car’s overall performance because of its mixture of high-speed corners, long straights and a slower technical part towards the end of the lap. Supersoft and medium tyre compounds will be used, a change from last season where Pirelli brought the soft and Supersoft. The circuit has been modified since 2012 and one of the changes has been made to […]
The promoter of the Korean Grand Prix says that he would consider holding the race at night as he bids to strike a better deal with Bernie Ecclestone. Korea joined the Formula 1 calendar in 2010 but has been beset by financial problems and poorly attended races. The 2014 event is set to switch to a date early in the season, with the race scheduled to take place on April 27th. But the FIA has listed the event provisional on the draft 2014 calendar and […]
GP3 driver Alex Fontana will make his Formula 1 test debut at Paul Ricard next week. Fontana, 21, is currently in sixteenth place in this season's GP3 series and is a member of the Lotus junior team programme. The Swiss driver will take to the circuit behind the wheel of Lotus's 2010 challenger, the R30, on Monday. "I’m naturally delighted that Lotus F1 Team has given me the opportunity of this test," said Fontana. "Every driver’s dream is to sit behind the wheel of a […]
Senior figures inside Formula 1 have hit out at the spiralling costs of Formula 1, ahead of this weekend's Singapore Grand Prix. Caterham owner Tony Fernandes says that self-interest means Formula 1 teams have missed an opportunity to cut costs in the sport. Fernandes entered the sport in 2010 on the promise of a budget cap, which was ultimately abandoned. "I’ve been consistent since day one I’ve been in Formula One that costs are too high and every… when I came into Formula One, people […]
