Reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel failed to make the Q3 cut for the first time since 2012 during qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix.

Vettel set the 13th fastest time during Q2 but will start from 12th after a penalty for Valtteri Bottas. Red Bull believe that a software issue with his RB10 restricted his progress.

"His engine software meant he was down on power with extremely poor drivability and we need to understand that, as it compromised his qualifying," said Red Bull team principal Christian Horner.

Vettel nonetheless believes that Red Bull has made progress.

"I think we have made a big step forward with the car, but of course I’m not happy that we didn’t make it to Q3," he said.

"I think the car is quick, but we struggled this afternoon with drivability which, in these conditions, made it even worse.

"It’s going to be a long race tomorrow and reliability will be the most important thing to make it to the flag, but I think there will be lots of opportunities for us."
