Friday’s second practice session for the United States Grand Prix was cancelled due to torrential weather conditions at Austin.
Heavy rain battered the circuit throughout lunchtime and while it briefly relented, the threat of lightening prohibited marshals from being present around the circuit.
This delayed the start of the session and race control deliberated over the plan for the remainder of the day.
The torrential rain returned to the area and flooded parts of the track and after almost an hour the decision was made to cancel the session, with the medical helicopter unable to fly.
Nico Rosberg had set the quickest time during a rain-affected first practice session on Friday morning.
It is the first time a practice session has been cancelled in over a decade.
Further inclement weather conditions are expected to adversely affect Austin on Saturday.
