Sauber has confirmed that Kimiya Sato will act as the team's reserve driver during next weekend's Japanese Grand Prix.

Sato, 23, tested for the team at the young driver test at Silverstone earlier this season.

Sato has been a championship contender in Auto GP this year.

'Given the history of the Sauber F1 Team with valuable Japanese partners like NEC Japan, and its support for motorsport in a country that has very passionate fans, both parties took this opportunity to work together', read a Sauber statement.

The Japanese driver will also take part in a straight line test at Vairano in Italy on October 18th.

He is no relation to namesake Takuma Sato, who raced in Formula 1 between 2002 and 2008.
