Carlos Sainz Jr. expressed his optimism that Toro Rosso an enjoy a strong weekend after a 'positive' day of practice for the Spanish Grand Prix.

Sainz was fifth quickest in the opening session on Friday morning and placed ninth in the second session later in the day.

"It was a positive start for the weekend, we knew that this track was going to suit us a bit more than Bahrain, we have better expectations, the car is working well, well balanced [and the] small upgrades we brought look to be working fine," he said.

"Our balance was quite decent, considering the low grip and how slow we are in terms of lap time compared to other years - we are very, very slow I know.

"It is not nice to see and feel [the comparatively slow pace] inside the car but the important thing is we are in the right window and we need to make this weekend work for us."

Sainz added that he has not changed his approach despite this weekend's event being his home race.

"I’m focusing things how I normally do [them] and there’s no way that I can be less focused or do things differently," he said.

"I’ve had an approach that has worked for four races and I’m not changing it for my home Grand Prix."
