Carlos Sainz Jr says he deserves the vacant seat alongside Max Verstappen at Toro Rosso next season.

Verstappen, 17, will become the youngest driver in Formula 1 history next year and he was set to partner Daniil Kvyat at the Faenza-based team.

But Sebastian Vettel's departure from Red Bull led to Kvyat being promoted to the senior squad, in turn opening up a space at Toro Rosso.

Sainz Jr, who became the first Red Bull-backed driver to win the Formula Renault 3.5 crown earlier this month, believes that he deserves the drive.

"I think I deserve a seat at Toro Rosso, and anything other than a seat at that level would bother me a bit," Sainz Jr, who tested for both Red Bull and Toro Rosso in 2013, told Gestonia radio.

"Max finished third in the championship, which was won by another rookie," the Spaniard said, referring to Verstappen placing third in Formula 3, behind Lotus youngster Esteban Ocon and Tom Blomqvist.

"I was in a category above. I was the youngest in history to win it, with record wins and fastest laps. If Verstappen deserves that seat, then I deserve it even more."
