Nico Rosberg set the fastest time during the opening practice session ahead of this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix.

In dry and fine conditions the German set a time of 1:35.461s to end up 0.151s quicker than Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

Fernando Alonso was third for Ferrari, half a second behind Rosberg, with Valtteri Bottas in fourth place for Williams.

Kimi Raikkonen ensured that both Ferrari drivers finished inside the top five while Daniel Ricciardo was sandwiched by McLaren pair Kevin Magnussen and Jenson Button.

Reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel and Daniil Kvyat rounded out the top 10.

Max Verstappen was 12th on his practice debut and looked comfortable before his session was cut short by an engine issue.
