Nico Rosberg set the pace during the final practice session ahead of qualifying for the German Grand Prix.

Rosberg's time of 1:17.779 was 0.601s clear of Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton as the field conducted qualifying simulations on option tyres.

Fernando Alonso suffered a spin in his Ferrari F14T midway through the session at turn eight but the Spaniard recovered to set the third quickest time, just 0.004s down on Hamilton.

The Williams duo of Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas led the way following runs on prime tyres but they ended the session in fourth and fifth places respectively.

Kevin Magnussen set the pace during the opening stages and finished in sixth, ahead of Daniel Ricciardo and Kimi Raikkonen.

The Finn was the first driver so switch to options and duly went quickest, although he was denied a further attempt due to a fuel system problem on his Ferrari F14, which confined him to the garage for the last part of the session

Reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel was ninth, while Nico Hulkenberg rounded out the top 10 for Force India.

Daniil Kvyat led Toro Rosso team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne, with Jenson Button a lowly 13th in the McLaren after complaining of understeer.

Sergio Perez eclipsed compatriot Esteban Gutierrez, with Jules Bianchi splitting the Lotus pairing of Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado.

Adrian Sutil was 19th for Sauber after a 'hybrid system' problem, ahead of the Caterham duo of Kamui Kobayashi and Marcus Ericsson. Max Chilton rounded out the runners after an electronics glitch truncated his session.
